Tools like Freestyle and Style let you create very sculptural forms but when these forms have to be turned to production tooling it can create issues.
Our current workflow is as follows:
Sculpt the part for concepts through development approvals phases
For tooling development we run draft analysis and use this to tweak the surfaces to try to smooth out the parting line.
Then split the parts and add B surface details.
That phase of tweaking the surfaces can take a long time - nobody wants a wild parting line.
What would be perfect would be the ability to draw a 3D curve set (on existing surfaces would be fine) then force the adjacent surfaces to change so that the parting line is now the drawn 3D curve set. This can be done. Think Design has had this capability since 2001. In that system you can additionaly define the minimum draft angle from the parting line, and the ThinkDesign Global Shape Modelling system alters the selected surfaces to the criteria set.
I am fairly sure everyne involved in production design and tooling would welcome this!
