Just switched to Creo 5 and the default selection filters are so annoying. Now I have to add two more clicks every time I open a file or switch windows because I have to change the filter selection from Geometry to something logical like Parts for Assembly mode of Features for Part mode. The My Filters option doesn't help either because you can't set that as the default.
PTC please update the filter selection interface so users can see which filter is selected in My Filters and so that the filters can be defined in a convenient table interface.

Is there a config.pro option to set a default selection filter value in Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire 5.0 and Creo Parametric

After digging into it a little more, I found you can actually set the My Filters setting as the default by selecting the "Set my Filter as the default selection filter" box. (File > Options > Selection).
However, all that shows up in the selection filter is My Filter, which is not helpful in seeing what you're selecting.
Also, you have to set it up separately while in each mode, Assembly, Part, etc. as opposed to defining it in a convenient table interface.
So, not close to ideal, but maybe PTC will refine it.
