Improve copying of datum points set as datum targets from one model to another model

Improve copying of datum points set as datum targets from one model to another model

Currently not able to copy points (multiple points in one feature) that are set as datum targets from one model to another and maintain the same naming scheme in target model copying to.

You are unable to show the set datum target or create a new one without getting the error message "Point has been set, try again."

For instance say you want to transfer the points from the machine model to the casting model or the other way around.

The points do copy over but lose their original names and do not display as set datum targets in the destination model.

or make it so set datum target points may be used in higher level models.

Pub geom or Top Down method using skeleton model comes to mind.

Dean Long,

Are you able to use the point in a datum target on the drawing using the same name (example X1 casting level and X1 machine level)

If not are you able to display the datum target balloon in the machining drawing from the casting level without re-creating it?

What method are you using for Cast to Machined model....Master/Merge, Inheritence, PubGeom? I ask because I think there are differences in the way Creo regards "used" names (I.E set datums and targets that reference those set datums).

Regardless, I always use custom Datum Target symbols that have Variable Text so I can modify the names to avoid an oops.

You must be inspecting the cast part independently from the machined? Your Datum reference frame is the same for both parts, correct?

Using newer merged method (part to part no assemblies involved)

Drawing datum targets are being driven from model datum points.

Casting and Machining parts are being inspected separately and cast datum's carry over to the machined level with same reference frame.

New as in Merge/Inheritance, then?

No, you cannot use the same names for datum features in any method. But I also seem to remember you can (and need) to "Set" the datums in the "machined" model as well. Then in each drawing you can add the datum targets to the same points.

But...in either case, I remember having to "create" the point for the target instead of "Use" point. I think this is why I created the variable text target symbol with the leader.

Dean,

Yes, Merge/Inheritance.
I have been using the same point names and Set Daum Names in the models controlling the datum targets and Set Datums since the 90's.

You can do one of 2 ways....
option 1 - Create and set them them in the machined model and drawing first then in the casting model & drawing.

option 2 - Create them in the casting model/drawing first (correct names like X),

save casting model and drawing to your pdm system,

rename the datum & point names in your casting model and save model to your hard drive (incorrect names like XX),

create and set them in your machined model/ drawing with correct name and save machined model and drawing to hard drive (correct names like X)

retrieve casting model that you save previously to your pdm system or other folder to your working folder

open machine model and drawing regenerate and save locally and then to pdm system when all look good.

Hope this helps,
Don Anderson
