Improve the management of annotations created in the base model of an Merge / Inheritance feature.

Improve the management of annotations created in the base model of an Merge / Inheritance feature.

  1. Show annotations in 3D models and drawings
    1. Be able to easily show in the final 3D model and its drawing the dimensions and geometric tolerances created in the base model of an External Cut Out, Merge or Intersect function in the same easy way as with a Ext Inheritance Cut Out, Merge or Intersect feature.
    2. We don't want to give the possibility to create Varied Items in this case. The base model must remain the absolute reference.

    3. More simple, we need the benefit of the Ext Inheritance Cut Out, Merge or Intersect feature to show annotations but without the ability to create Varied Items.

  2. Creating annotations:
    1. In the 3D model or its drawing, add a geometric tolerance in a dimension created in the base model of an External Cut Out, Merge or Intersect or Ext Inheritance Cut Out, Merge or Intersect feature.

Hello,

There has been no answer to this topic for 2 years?
It is a very useful function for the use of MBD and GD&T.

Best regards.

Hello,

Thank you @YLocatelli for bringing attention to @cbertschy's idea that is now acknowledged. It is gathering votes and getting noticed.

For your information, at the end of 2021, we started a new process that includes an intake form for all new ideas moving forward. Please see below the questions we ask to guide users. Since this idea was posted before that time, I am not asking you, @cbertschy,  to answer them per se, but perhaps you would want to give some contextual information.

1. Describe your environment: What is your industry? What is your role in your organization? Describe your stakeholders.
2. What product & version are you currently running?
3. Describe the problem you are trying to solve. Please include detailed documentation such as screenshots, images or video.
4. What is the use case for your organization?
5. What business value would your suggestion represent for your organization?

Additionally, I invite you to check out this topic where PTC executives explain product managers' approach to customer ideas and input for product roadmaps.

Hello,

Thank you. Her are the answer at all your questions:

  1.  Describe your environment: What is your industry? What is your role in your organization? Describe your stakeholders.
    1. Heavy equipment, combustion engines and hydraulic equipment
  2. What product & version are you currently running?
    1. CREO 7.0.7.0 and Windchill 11.2.1.14
  3. Describe the problem you are trying to solve. Please include detailed documentation such as screenshots, images or video.
    1. Easy display in the 3D model and/or drawing of dimensions and annotations from a Merge / Inheritance function. More generally better management of the Merge / Inheritance function for MBD. Screenshots are in the Idea.
  4. What is the use case for your organization?
    1. As we create all machining a 3D model that is the negative shape of the machining, we use then a Merge / Inheritance feature to apply the machining shape in the raw part. This is a common daily job and usecase.
    2. Display of dimensions of machined parts in drawing and in the future display of dimensions in the 3D model / MBD..
  5. What business value would your suggestion represent for your organization?
    1. A great business value because it would allow us to consider MBD more serenely without changing our working methodologies and keeping a compatibility with the majority of our existing 3D models. Today, the current CREO Merge / Inheritance function with its current options and behavior is a blocking point for MBD.
    2. I have already asked our users to change the methodology and not to create the negative machining in a 3D model, but they do not want to do so, this way of proceeding has a great daily added value.

Hi @cbertschy ,

If I understand this request correctly, you are trying to propagate the base model's annotations to the end merge model, right?

Currently only annotation feature owned annotations supports propagation via data sharing features like merge, copy geometry etc.

at this point, standalone annotations still do not support this propagation (nor shown driving dimensions).

After all of your annotations are owned by an annotation feature in the base (source ) part, they can all be propagated and shown in the target (end) part.

All you need to do is to include them in the following dialog (using Copy all or by individually selecting the desired annotations)

Can you please clarify if this works for you as expected using this flow?

Thanks,

Hi @Mfridman ,

Thank you for the answer. This is Ok for 3D Annotations in Annotations features, but we also need a solution for Driving Dimensions created in features like Extrude, revolve..... Our goal is to display Driving Dimensions from the base model to the end merge model. This is possible today only using QuerySel and trying to click on the appropriate geometry in the end merge model and select the feature in the Query Sel result list. It is not possible to directly selecting features in the model tree or in the end merge model, expect activating the option Inheritance in the Merge Inheritance feature (that today is not acceptable because of the one way associativity.

Thank you @cbertschy  I believe that the requirement is clear now. Updating the status to reflect it
