M instead of diameter sign before thread dimension.

0 Kudos

M instead of diameter sign before thread dimension.

1. Automotive industry. Mechanical designer

2. Creo 7.

3. When showing the diameter of a threaded hole on a drawing, the diameter symbol is shown in front of the diameter dimension. It would be better if an M or G, ... (depending on thread type) would be shown on in front of the diameter dimension. Now the diameter symbol has to be manually replaced by an M. If you forget to change the diameter symbol in the drawing, the drawing is wrong and bad parts are made.

4. What is the use case for your organization?

5. What business value would your suggestion represent for your organization?

Use case:

We are a department of TE Connectivity that designs the assembly machine to produce our products. We still have to make 2D drawings for the our suppliers of components of the machines we design.

If we make a threaded hole in our models and we show the thread dimensions in our drawings,  we manually have to change the diameter symbol into an M. If we don't do it, makes a non threaded hole instead of a threaded hole. Then we have extra costs to rework the delivered parts.

If the diameter symbol would automatically be replaced by an M (for metric thread), then we would not have the risk of extra rework costs due to a human error anymore.

Can this be done in the hole file by creating your own callout?

Thread Notes (ptc.com)

Doesn't the thread callout need a pitch, too?

@ptc-2735238, Any thought on @BenLoosli 's note?

It can be done with Thread Notes. But I rather use dimensions instead of notes on my drawings.

For standard threads we don't mention the pitch.
