Make Unique from the Model Tree (a rename function)

Make Unique from the Model Tree (a rename function)

Semi-conductor industry

450 Creo users

Average assembly size: 4,000 unique parts

Creo Parametric 7.0.3.0

Scenario:

We have an assembly where we assembled a part or sub-assembly several times throughout the assembly structure.  In the design process we find that one of the occurrences needs to be different, and thus needs a new PN.

Request:

Requesting a function where we can highlight one of the occurrences and "Make Unique".

  •  It would do a rename function on just that one occurrence
  • All the other occurrences throughout the model tree would remain the original name
  • The function should work for either a part or an assembly in the model tree
  • We would like this function to be strictly a Creo function (not involving Windchill)
  • Recommendation:  right-click; Make Unique

Justification:

  • This scenario happens frequently in design.  We think we can reuse the same part or sub-assembly, over and over in the same design, but through the design process, we discover that one (or more or occurrences) needs that something extra or something different.
  • If we use the current Creo rename function, it will replace all occurrences in the model tree.
  • If we do a Save As on just the occurrence and then replace with unrelated component in the reporting assembly, it is way too many steps (especially since NX already has "Make Unique" functionality in two clicks and our NX users (450 users) use this function all the time.

This is exactly what the existing 'Replace - By Copy' command already does.

Thank you TomU!

Exactly what I was looking for.

Go figure,..I asked the PTC hotline.  They went to PTC R&D.  They said to open a Product Idea.

Hello, Thanks @SherryTakahashi for the idea and @TomU for the info.

Hi TomU,

I am finding that the method you showed only works for parts (not sub-assemblies) and only at the same level.  Otherwise, the "By Copy" is greyed out.

Any helpful tips?

@SherryTakahashi,

You are correct, this approach currently only works for parts, not sub-assemblies.  The link @StephenW provided is to a similar idea for sub-assemblies.  There is a workaround given by the product manager in that thread, but it's not quite as simple as the existing 'Replace By Copy' functionality.  Sorry.
