Multibody Trim Body Operation

Multibody Trim Body Operation

Improvements to the Multibody boolean operations include the ability to Trim a Body by another Body, Trim a  Body by a Plane. Currently the only way to Trim by a Plane is using the Split Body by object command, but it currently (Creo 7) creates an extra body that we have to delete afterwards. It's faster from a modeling point of view to have the option for the extra body not to be created, and also faster from a regeneration point of view, in case of complex geometry. The Trim Body by another body is also a very needed feature, its similar to Creo Trim to Geometry in Cavity Manufacturing module or regular Union Trim in Catia.

Example operation of Union Trim in Catia:

The "Trim a  Body by a Plane/Surface" is under consideration for Creo 10.0

Some of the mentioned aspects had been delivered with Creo 10.0.
Please refer to the following articles to learn about Split & Trim enhancements in Creo 10.0

Hello @mneumueller ,

The first link is not functioning.

The second link, split by volume leads to the online help of Creo 10. It's very useful to be able to trim instead of only spliting a body, since it avoids having to constantly remove the uneeded bodies if we try to use only boolean operations.with solid bodies as a tool.

Based on the images alone, is not clear if the trimming object is a quilt or a solid body. I guess it must be a surface, since on a previous comment about Creo 10, you mentioned «The "Trim a  Body by a Plane/Surface" is under consideration for Creo 10.0». If we have to use surfaces or quilts to Trim a solid body, we could use the quilt to make a "solidify" as a workaround to trim a solid body. Anyway, it's more intuitive for new users to use a "Trim Body" operation than a "Solidify". because the name of the operation is more explicit about the desired outcome.

Can you clarify if the trimming object can be another body, or if it needs to be a quilt?

The third link is working, and it's a nice and welcome addition to the Creo toolset that will increase user productivity.

Hi @S_Edgenear

the first  link should work now and point you to the related what's new in  Creo 10.0 page.

To answer your question: the trimming object is still a Plane/Surface/quilt.
Supporting a "Body" as trimming object is envisioned as potential future enhancement.
