In interactive Creo, a user can replace one component with another, even when the replacement is not part of the same family table or interchange group. This is done by enabling the ‘Unrelated Component’ option on the Replace dialog (see attachment replace.jpg).
We need the equivalent API support so that the replacement can be automated within a PDM system. If the replacement component is geometrically equivalent to the original, no user intervention should be required, and any constraints should be automatically reconnected.
