Need to drag a Creo Parametric model from a Windchill page (typically a search result or a managed collection) embedded in the creo session and drop it directly in the active assembly in order to create in one step an assemble feature with

Indeed, our use case is to perform a Widnchill classified search for Catalog components (eg WTparts in Libraries classified with PartLinks), and once the WTpart is found, browse its related 3D model and bring into the active assembly in one operation by drag and drop instead of doing many steps such as

  • copy the cad model filename in Windchill page the go in Creo assembly, create assemble feature, and in the Open Model window paste the file name
  • open in Creo with right click and then assemble from objects in sessions (provided you can remember which object among the hundreds of objects in memory you have previously selected)
  • add to WS and then assemble from objects in WS (provided you can remember which object among the hundreds of objects in WS you have previously selected)

Unfortunately we have found no way for such a drag and drop in the standard PTC Windchill and Creo Parametric integration. As of now, the most efficient seems to copy and paste the file name, but it is not welcome by users, I am looking for a more user friendly approach.

We have considered alternative solutions, such as adding to a managed collection, and adding the Windchill Managed collection to the Creo Favorites. This works well, the managed collection is well displayed from the Favorites links, but there is no way to see the Creo objects of the managed collection in the Creo Open window (neither from Open nor from Assemble / Open) when doing Open from favorites.

Once again, the copy of the model file name and paste in Creo Open seems the most straight forward process, but not user friendly.

According to the Creo 2.0 Help files

"

Search Navigator

If you are connected to a Windchill server, files are listed in the embedded Web browser. You can drag a file from the Number window in the Search navigator to the graphics window. The details page for that object open in the embedded Web browser. You can then drag a part or assembly from the browser to the graphics window.

"

Though I haven't been able to get it to work right in quite a while.

The information is still in the Creo 3.0 M100 help documentation as well.

We are working now with Creo 2.0 M200 and testing with both Windchill 10.2 M020 and 11.0 F000.

But I can't make it to work.

I'll dig in the Creo help and give a second try, thanks to both of you.

It seems there are some tickets related to drag and drop not functioning in Creo & Windchill.

Perhaps there are some mistakes in the help file as it is not working following the help file.

I actually got this to work by dragging the "Open In Creo" icon directly onto the Creo window.  (It did not work if dragging the "Name".)

Hello Tom,

Thanks you for posting the video, it helps !

This is interesting, but I can't make it work. What version of Creo are you using ?

Beside, you are doing the drag and drop from within the Embedded Creo search, that is not able to perform a classification search of WTparts classified with PartsLink, or cannot deal with favorites.

My question for dragging and dropping from a Windchill page remains unresolved for now.

Best regards,

Philippe

It works for me for these versions:

Creo 2, M210; Windchill 9.1

Creo 2, M210; Windchill 10.2

In both cases, I am running the embedded mozilla-based browser (the internet explorer didn't seem to work)

Also I was only able to drag the "Open in Creo" icon.  If you can get that icon to show up in the search results page, then you should be part-way there...

As Paul mentioned, the trick is the "Open in Creo" icon.  CS211138 confirms this.  There does seem to be a difference though between this icon in the workspace vs. this icon in commonspace.  In my case the commonspace one works fine but the workspace one does not.

Workspace "Actions" Column (does not work)

Commonspace "Document Format" Column (works!)

I've tested both Creo 3.0 M100 and Creo 4.0 B000 with Windchill 10.2 M030 and I'm not seeing any difference in behavior.

Fantastic : it finally works with Mozilla and the OpenInCreo icon !

Still a few comments

- it should work with IE11

- it remains tricky since this icon is not available in all windchill pages

I firmly believe this idea still deserves a better solution and more robust from PTC R&D

Good news. Philippe.

I changed one option "windows_browser_type" to mozilla_based_browser and then restarted Creo. But it didn't work with me.

May I know if you also changed any other options?

No, nothing special - did you use teh OpenInCreo icon ? What platfrom have you used ?

Great, I can drag the icon "OpenInCreo" from CommonSpace and Search window today with Creo2 & WC10.2.

But it didn't work from WorkSpace or Managed Collection. It seems I could not find the "document format" ( to show the OpenInCreo Icon) in the available column list when customizing the view in Managed Collection.

Hello Simon,

Good news.

I had the same finding : this icon is not available in all Windchill pages (typically Managed collection), this is why I am maintaining this idea open and keep asking for votes.

Else it may end in a customisation to add this icon in some pages.

Best regards,

Philippe

I aggree with Philippe. This would be an usefull enhancement for Windchill. Also support for the most common browser (IE) should be implemented. Drag and drop for the icon field (e.g. part, asm, drw, aso) seems to be working but does not drop the file itself but the gif of the file type icon. If this is modified the functionality would be supported and users can simply drag their files into the window for placing.

Therefore I voted for this as a great enhancement.

This is the video I have made in July thanks to Paul and Tom showing it works as expected.

Hello dear community,

This is to let you know that in Windchill 11.0, the drag and drop is supported with IE 11.0 and Creo Parametric 2.0.

I have tested it succesfully and it will be part of our standard delivery to our users.

Details

  1. - implemented in WC11.0 M010
  2. - implemented in Creo Param 2.0
  3. - need to add teh windchill server in IE trusted sites
  4. - works with same CAD Format icon than with Firefox

We are better set with IE 11.0 generally speaking for service continuity and user support.

Best regards,

Philippe
