OOTB Support for common industry Standard Orientations (for example DIN70000/ISO 8855:1991)

OOTB Support for common industry Standard Orientations (for example DIN70000/ISO 8855:1991)

Many of our customers wish to change the default coordinate system orientation, for example Automotive customers who need their templates to be compliant with DIN70000/ISO 8855 standards.

Changing the default coordinate system orientation also extends to other domains/sectors, for example customers in the BIM world or customers working with a lot of other CAD systems (where the Z-axis is normal to the TOP plane).

Although it is technicaly possible to manipulate the orientation of the default coordinate system (by using configuration options orientation user_defined, x_angle <value> and y_angle <value>), to get a correct setup is very tedious and sometimes it is simply not possible to meet the requirements of these clients as the current mechanism is too limiting (no z_value can be set)

It would be incredibly valueable if it was possible to simply set the standard to which the default coordinate system should be oriented to (automotive example), or at least enhance the current mechanism to allow for simpler, yet more complex configurations/orientations.

Thank you for publishing your idea. We need more information as specified in the form you saw in the submission process. (questions below). The more details and context you give to document your idea, the better. Think about ways to educate and convince other Community members to support your idea and present your case to the product management team for consideration.

Please let us know within the next two weeks.

1. Describe your environment: What is your industry? What is your role in your organization? Describe your stakeholders.

2. What product & version are you currently running?

3. Describe the problem you are trying to solve. Please include detailed documentation such as screenshots, images or video.

4. What is the use case for your organization?

5. What business value would your suggestion represent for your organization?

I also invite you to check out this topic where 2 PTC executives explain product managers' approach to customer ideas and input for product roadmaps.

1. Describe your environment: What is your industry? What is your role in your organization? Describe your stakeholders.

I work for a reseller in Benelux and we support customers from different domains, including Automotive which have specific requirements relating to default coordinate orientation

2. What product & version are you currently running?

Creo 4 - Creo 8

3. Describe the problem you are trying to solve. Please include detailed documentation such as screenshots, images or video.

Please see the Product Idea description above.

4. What is the use case for your organization?

Very often the default orientation needs to be changed and this is currently very tedious or not possible. This is mostly required because the Z-axis needs to be pointing upward (normal to TOP plane).

A couple of examples:

  • Automotive - according to DIN70000/ISO 8855
  • Data Exchange MCAD - Data exhanged between other suppliers/cad systems where the Z-axis is oriented upward (this includes PTC's Creo Elements/Direct)
  • Data Exchange BIM - In the BIM world the Z-axis also needs to be oriented upward.

5. What business value would your suggestion represent for your organization?

Without the propert tools/means to configure the default coordinate orientation it is no easy to support customer is specific domains.

There is always some sort of workaround which means a compromise in the setup/methodlogy.

Being able to configure the default orientation according to common industry norms OOTB, or just more easily than what is possible today, would greatly improve this.

We also use a coord. system with the Z-direction normal to the TOP datum plane. Since the default coord. system of Creo has the Y-direction normal to the TOP datum plane, the default X-sections are in the wrong direction and have to be manually redefined towards our coord. system. But still then the orientation in Creo View is not correct. So please also add this enhancement in Creo View.

For us both enhancements would be very usefull.
