Prevent removal of parameters in drawing tables from formats

Prevent removal of parameters in drawing tables from formats

We have drawing formats where there are model parameters linked to the title block cells. Many users end up accidentally removing the parameter call outs in their drawing (like &PROI_REVISION, &DESCRIPTION, etc) as they attempt to edit it. The models end up getting released with these broken links because the approvers/managers are not concerned about this. However, the admins are. We end up with parameters or attributes in Windchill either missing or incorrect from this. Can we have a way to lock the cells where they can't remove the parameter, BUT can still edit the value of the parameter?

Thanks!

That issue is usually a lack of training for the users so they understand that they need to edit those parameters, not the block of information itself. Explain the importance of using the parameters. Show them what problems it causes when they revise a drawing and need something to change. Show them the information in Windchill, if you have it linked and the information uploaded.

Ben,

We can talk extensively offline about this. In short, there are many factors that created this behavior. That being said, there is a focus on having the 'print' correct and not wasting time on anything else, including Windchill or basic "tool" requirements (like geometry checks, read only features...). The idea of this ticket is to limit the users who either don't know, don't care or don't want to do the extra clicks to either fix a drawing or correctly enter data in cells with parameters.

I agree, that there are outside forces that create these situations, usually managers pushing to get that print released. I have been in your shoes with users who just don't want to be bothered to learn how to use the system the way the company admins have it set up. Luckily I am in a small company and I send out 'broken finger' awards to those who mess up the files by circumventing parameters. Larger organizations with multiple sites, this becomes harder. I have been an admin for sites of 10, 50 and 250 users.

Maybe change the scope a little of your request to have restricted table blocks that force the user to edit them in the parameter menu, rather on the face of the drawing. We already have restricted parameters that force the user to select the value from a drop down menu. Adding a restriction to designated table cells would do the trick.

Nice idea, but many of these fields (like title) can't be a restricted parameter.

Read my response again.

Restricted parameters are one method of controlling the 'right' verbage in a cell.

What You are asking for is what I said in my last paragraph: Make the cells in a table restricted so the values cannot be overwritten, only changed by editing a parameter.

Do you have documentation on how to do this?

No, PTC would need to modify the code for cells to be restricted.

I'm asking how to do what you asked "Make the cells in a table restricted so the values cannot be overwritten,"

I know and it would have to be a functionality change of the way table cells are created and stored. Only PTC can make such a change to their code.

OK. I thought you were giving me some current alternative.

I like the idea of locking a table cell down in the format.  The problem within the software today is that it is too dang easy for the users to wipe out the parameter.  PTC needs to realize that in making notes so easy to modify is also causing millions and millions of dollars across industry.  If anyone out there has found a solution, please let us know.

2 METHODS TO WIPE OUT PARAMETERS:

1. DOUBLE-CLICK ON THE NOTE in the cell and just start typing.

- There is no warning that the user is wiping out the parameter

- This is the easiest method to change the description and the most intuitive method for our users

- But now the description is dumb text and does not match the description in our PDM, Change Management and MRP systems.

- This has caused countless ECOs, costing the company $$$$$$$

2. MINI-TOOLBAR on the description

- We have pushed the PTC philosophy of using the left-click to our users.  They click on the Properties icon.

- The user does not recognize what a parameter is (600 users who are working against mean deadlines), so they wipe out and enter the new description
