Revision Cloud

Revision Cloud

We need to mark through revision cloud on the drawing. However creating revision cloud is not in curent functionality. Creating revision cloud by making symbol is long process and also not usable repeatadly since shape of revision cloud may not be same for all places. Since we are adopting creo also for preparation of drawing, I wish this functionality is present in the future release of the CREO software.

It's been two years. There is no update for this yet.

What do you mean "Revision Cloud" can you show an examble screen shot or something.... ? It is not clear what you are asking for ?

I do not believe this is part of ANSI or ISO Spec for marking the changes that occurred on a revision of a DWG. I believe the proper symbol is a revision balloon... a circle with the revisioon # or letter inside it next to the dimension's that have changed.

It's an indicator of a change on a drawing. Some industries use it extensively. I've used it once in my 27 years.

I use this quite often.

Hi David,

Can you please show a example of the way that you mentioned of marking the changes?

My company's Norway engineering group uses revision clouds often. They do their models/drawings in Inventor and AutoCAD so no help there.

This is how we mark drawing revision changes. We use a revision symbol that is a triangle.

Thanks Stephen.

I use this symbol too. Beside it, I put cloud line as well to clarify exactly what is changed. And for feature changes, either adding or removing, I think cloud lines are necessary to clarify it.

Yes the revision cloud as shown by Stephen. I always use the symbol however, sometimes we have client's requirement that we must show revision cloud. We did it after exporting drawing to AutoCAD. If we expost it to AutoCAD, the the associativity of the drawing with 3D model breaks. So next time, if we revise the 3D model, we have redraw again those revision cloud in AutoCAD. I wish CREO drawing a has a shape ( principally it is rectangular having the edges with curve like revision cloud). So wherever needed, we put that rectangular shape ( may be line style is as per revision cloud). This will solve our purpose.

I'm personally against using clouds, especially in a digital compare world. However, for those groups that depend on it, we had to create a symbol with multiple shape variations and sizes. You can set it to scale as long as you don't care about the size of the curves for the cloud.  We also found the PDF software Nuance has a cloud function as part of their PDF compare. It's sometimes doesn't turn out as expected though.

Revision clouds are a tool used by some top companies, including one of our automotive customers.

In this case, the cloud is red and is thicker than an object line. You cannot miss it.

The idea is of course to make sure someone reading the drawing will be able to quickly and accurately identify the change.

Other ideas beyond the revision symbol (such as the triangle) to improve the revision process include:

Colored symbols, such as red triangles for the latest change. Previous revision symbols are changed to black.

Color schemes of geometry changes, such as changing color of affected circles/lines/arcs to someting other than black. More of a 2D drafting idea.

Meticulous zone callouts of where changes are in the revision block.

When  my 'customers' in this office/shop are complaining about finding and understanding revisions, it would be nice to have a countermeasure. A revision cloud tool is a good idea. But I am open to other ideas to identify changes more explicitly.

The cloud is also a very useful tool to highlight where detail has been removed to draw the eye of the end user when issued a revised drawing, putting a revision triangle alone in empty space isn't the most clear indication.

PTC can you Please look into developing this! We use this extensively - Also for Hold clouds. We did have a programmer who was able to create one for us - By picking on 2 points of a drawing & it would make a rectangular cloud. But he has since left the company. But even if you could replicate this which I know u could would be of a lot of benefit to a lot of users. Many Thanks

Top 10 companies in the Oil & Gas field are using such a representation to comment documents and drawings. Please make this feature available in Creo View also. Best regards,
