Split freeform without changing the 3D shape

In freeform if you split all faces of a ball, it transforms into a (sort of) cube. In other software (i.e. Lightwave 3D metaNURBS) there was a way to split all faces without affecting the underlying generated SubD geometry. It's like when you "elevate" the level from base to level 1, but making the level 1 the new base level.
