extrude solid feature, you sketch a diameter 1.0 or 1000.0 sketch, the default extrude depth is always 216.51, how to set the extrude depth to follow a ratio to the sketch size?

Don't forget to vote for your own idea.

I think no option is available for controlling depth of extrude. I would vote for your idea..

Yeah, the default extrusion depth is a mystery.  On my system today, it is 40.938; why, I don't know.

Why not have the system set the new extrusion depth to equal whatever last value the user specified?

The GUI in this software goes out of its way to slow the user down and make them go through extra steps, mouse movements and clicks...

The workflow for extrusions (also for offset datum planes) that I'd like to see which is completely stymied by Creo is following:

1) you can very easily make an extrusion to go "up-to" something (by dragging the extrusion handle, holding SHIFT + clicking on an edge, curve, plane, or vertex) -> that is very good shortcut; it automatically switches the type to "extrude to selected point, curve, plane or surface"

2) now things looks good, but maybe you don't want to end up with such a child-parent dependency, so you switch the type back to "specified by depth value"

what I'd like to happen is for the extrusion to stay where I just put it - instead, it changes to some seemingly random value for the depth.

What reason is there to randomize the depth value????

The way it works now is actually pretty strange if you think about how the PTC programmers must have spent time to come up with an algorithm, and then decided "yeah, this is near-optimal as far as frustrating the user!"

Only recentlty did I start looking at this and attempted some changes to start parts to fix. Here are my use cases and results.

1. Create a part using a start part (units are inches) that was created using standard datums and csys as first features. Create a extrude and open sketcher and draw a box.

     - The rectangle dimesions typically are large (100 to over 200 inches) requiring a user to adjust. More complex sketch shape makes adjusting numbers a chore to the user.

     - Accept the sketch and the default extrude depth is large typically over 200 inches.

Partial Solution 1:

Edit the definition of the Datum's (Side, Top and Front) and select a Size of 10 x10.

This upfront looked like a solution to the sketch size (not extrude depth) but it locked the datums to be 10x10 and did not auto resize to the part size. Not desirable solution.

Datums 10X10

No Size set for the Datum's

Partial Solution 2:

Create a sketch line (circle) about the size of the part you want to create, in my example a 10 inch circle. Then create the extruded box, in this use case the size of extrude box including the depth were manageable sizes. The Datum's though stayed at a ratio to the sketched circle. I had to delete the sketch circle to get datums to size to the extrude.

Both solutions did not solve the issue completely, the second was probably the closest. Looks like some customization may help but going to add extra steps on to the user, something PTC should solve or comment on. Would like to hear PTC reasoning on this. Not to many users create parts that are 16 feet (200"x200"x200").

This idea https://community.ptc.com/t5/Creo-Ideas/Depth-of-Extrude/idi-p/459505 already has significantly more kudoes (votes)

Maybe this should be closed and votes added to that one? @Tmetcalf
