It is possible to include a Layer Names column in the model tree. I was initially going to recommend this to our users that are not familiar with layers, but I discovered that this only reflects if the feature itself is in a layer.
In the image below, the starting datum elements are in layers as shown. However, Extrude 1 is not shown as in any layer. Extrude 1 however, does contain an axis in the 3_ALL_AXES layer, and feature information reflects this.
The "Layer Names" column should be adjusted so it reflects all entities in "Entities and Geometries" in the Layer section of Feature Info. This can help users quickly and accurately track down what layers are controlling items in a feature.
