  With the wide-spread use of additive manufacturing, you now have more options than ever before for part and assembly design. That’s because without the restrictions of traditional manufacturing, more intricate structures can now be used to optimize weight, strength, and even heat distribution.   (For an overall introduction, read our Beginner’s Guide to Lattice Structures in Additive Manufacturing.)   In a recent presentation from PTC University, Matt Huybrecht discussed and demonstrated new features in Creo that support lattice structures for those who want to use them. However, before you start, a few questions came up that we thought you might find interesting:   Can I do a structural analysis on stochastic lattices? YES! The DISPLAY of the geometry is that of simplified representation geometry, but the lattice geometry does contribute to mass properties calculations. Therefore, you can leverage it in structural analyses.   How is the additive manufacturing functionality licensed in Creo Parametric and what are the differences? There are two licenses available:       Creo Additive Manufacturing Extension (AMX) – An add-on extension that provides lattice structure creation and optimization and printer tray setup. It includes basic additive manufacturing capabilities, including: Out-of-the-box 3D printer support for Stratasys and 3D Systems printers. Model preparation (tessellation) Printer tray setup Global scaling Printability validation Model interrogation Calculations of build material Option to order 3D print       Creo Additive Manufacturing Plus Extension – An add-on extension that provides 3D metal printer connectivity, printer management, and tools to automate support structure generation.    For even more guidance from the PTC University team, check out the new LEARN classes now available online.

Here's the next set of tutorials in the series of Creo tips from our expert product managers.   Below you’ll find about 15 minutes of video how-tos to help you improve your CAD proficiency—whether you just started using Creo or you've been using it for years.   Ready to get started?   Make External References Independent of Their Source, by Default   Feature dependencies can be either local or external references. Local references relate to geometry in the model in which they were created. External references (or external dependencies) occur when you reference geometry (parts, subassemblies) outside the model in which they were created.   By default, external references depend on the model containing the geometry being referenced. The external feature depends on to the assembly where it was created, and every time you regenerate the parts or the assembly involved in the external reference, Creo Parametric looks for this feature’s references in the source part of the external reference.   In the tutorial below, Arnaud van de Veerdonk, Creo Product Manager, shows you how to configure Creo Parametric so external feature references are created without a dependency on the source model.   Watch the tutorial:   Create Standard Profile Configurations in Creo AFX   Those working with Creo Advanced Framework Extension (AFX) can quickly assemble, modify, and move profiles, creating joints between profiles, as well as creating, modifying, and copying connector or equipment elements.   In this tutorial, our Creo Product Manager, shows you how to quickly place standard profile configurations into an assembly using Creo AFX.   Here's the tutorial:   Handling Annotation Elements in MBD: 2 Tips   In model-based definition (MBD), getting annotations traditionally requires careful attention. Ready for another 15 minutes of Creo tips from our product manager experts?   In the videos below, you’ll see how to avoid pitfalls when adding components to a Model Tree, a faster way to reach your AR experiences, and tips for getting embossed text on curved surfaces.   Drag-and-Drop Without Restructuring the Model Tree   Normally when you drag-and-drop parts and subassemblies in the Model Tree, they're moved to wherever you drop them. However, restructuring components can lead to unwanted changes in the assembly structure.   However, you can change this behavior so Model Tree components are not restructured when you drag-and-drop components.   In this tutorial, Arnaud van de Veerdonk, Creo Product Manager, shows you how:     Bookmark Your AR Experiences   Reviewing an augmented reality (AR) experience of a Creo model over and over? Stop opening that experience using the link in your email. Instead, save a few steps by creating a bookmark that automatically launches the AR experience.   In this short tutorial, Creo Product Manager, Luke Westbrook shows you how to create a bookmark on your mobile device to quickly open an AR experience.   See how to do it:     Add Embossed Text to a Cylindrical Surface   If you've ever designed a text element to emboss on a curved part, you know that getting it just right can be a mind bender. Demystify the process. Watch the tutorial below to see how to create embossed text on a cylindrical surface in Creo Parametric with as few clicks as possible.   In the tutorial, Mark Fischer, Sr. Director of Product Management shows you how to:   Wrap text around a curved surface. Turn the text into a designated area (a quilt that can be used to indicate areas for close examination or a special treatment), create an offset of the designated area, and then use the thicken feature to create the embossed text. Edit the appearance of the embossed text (defining the size, font, angle, etc.). In some cases, you may not want Import Validation notifications when opening components in Creo Unite. For example, a model may have known issues, but you still want it in Creo for reference or for placements indicators.   Many users asked us for a way to toggle those notifications off (and on) after a model had been opened or imported. With Creo 6 or later, now you can.   With import validation notifications disabled, you don’t receive a report of failed validation in the Notification Center, or an indication of failed validation in the Model Tree. Here’s what you need to know to set your default to enable/disable these notifications:   To Enable or Disable Validation for Individual Components   If you want to disable or enable import validation notifications for individual components, right-click the component in the Model Tree and select Import Validation.    Image: Enabling import validation notifications for a component from the Model Tree   Note that when you select Enable Import Validation, it does not include import validation for models that have been imported or opened. One more example of what you can do with Motors now being feature. The attached video shows how to simply reroute the selected Motor to another Rotation Axis by clicking Edit References in the Mini Toolbar from either the Model Tree or the graphics area.

With Mechanism Motors now being features, you can also define relations, create UDFs, reroute them etc. Attached video shows an example of adding a relation to one of the Motor's coefficients. Note that the result of this relation is also visible in the dashboard as the value is greyed-out and is no longer accessible due to the added relation (A=100).

In Mechanism Motors are now features, which provides several advantages. One advantage is that the dashboard is unified and allows you to change the Driven Quantity in the Motor feature.   Check out the attached video for an example.

Attached to this blog post is a short presentation on the new enhancement to support non-linear cross-hatching styles in Creo 4.0. Although I'm listing this enhancement under the 2D Detailing area, it is also available in 3D models and Creo Layout. Any questions or feedback you have related to the support for non-linear cross hatching styles should be provided as comments to the blog post. That will be the easiest way for me to keep track of the comments and also be able to provide timely responses to your questions. If you follow this post, you can be notified of those comments as well and be able to learn from what others are asking.
