Open Multiple Windows in Creo VIEW (creo view formally productview)

Open Multiple Windows in Creo VIEW (creo view formally productview)

I often have the need to have multiple window open of Creo View (formally product view) opened from Windchill.  So embedded Creo View launched from Windchill Open in Creo View, not the stand alone application.

All the settings/browsers we've tried have been unreliable, although it has happened, it's unreliable, and we can't figure out why sometime is works and other time it doesn't.  For the most part it doesn't appear to be a standard functionality

This always works for us, but for some reason if you open more than one view at a time CreoView asks which one you want to save the annotation set to (it asks this even though I rarely, if ever, annotate because it is not robust and very buggy).  It usually requires several click to simply open more than one window.

I don't know if this is similar to you or helps you in any way, but just wanted to share it in case it does.

To be clear, i'm talking about two entirely different files from Windchill.  Not "Open in New View".  When we open a new model from windchill it asks Create New Session, or Add to Existing.  Selecting Create New Session only replaces existing model with new model.

Now I am a bit confused.  I also am talking about 2 entirely different files.  Are you saying that you only sometimes get the o0ption to create new session or add to existing?

We always get the message, but it doesn't open a new window, it just replaces the old.  Sometimes it works from a search page and middle mouse button.  We've tried tabbed groups on/off.  Different web browsers and setting.

What web browser/settings are you using?

We are currently using IE9 (64 and 32 bit both seem to work).  Have you tried putting both objects on your PDMLink clipboard, then opening them in CV from your PDMLink clipboard?  If you do that method usually you have to click on teh dwg in one of the menus on the left under the right section to get it to open.  A little annoying but works.

Is this the method you use?  What is your method for opening multiple windows of CV?

I use both methods, depending on the situation.  I think the key may be dbl clicking on the objects in the tab and column  for the Shared Root, because CV is often a blank screen before those are selected.

Yea, but that's lame .  I mean just open multiple windows.

Personally I like the tab approach the is now standard for internet browsers, but it would be nice to be able to break out a tab and make it its own window for comparison purposes. I would also like it to be cleaner to initially open them, like with Internet browsers...

These aspects are with it to me. I will vote for this.

I think this boils down to the licensing group.   PTC and admins want to control how many sessions the user has. It does lead to these downstream issues.  Another example of this comes into play when you want to manually send a job to the windchill publisher when a representation doesn't exist.  If you have a session of Creo View open, it must be closed before the job can be sent to the publisher.

I will offer this as a possible workaround to acquiring two windows

1) open a file as you normally do for the first Window.

2) For the second window, go to the "representation/annoation" table in windchill and RMB select "Save annotation" to bring up the UI where you can email a link of this representation to yourself in an email.  Once you get the email, click on the link to open in a new IE window or tab depending on IE settings.

It would be great to open multiple Creo View windows from Windchill. And it should be the natural and logic behaviour.

If you want to open 2 different views and compare them, you ned to open 2 Creo View windows separately; opening 2 tabs in the same windows is not enough.

I think Creo View used to open multiple windows from windchill before, I don't know why it's not working anymore. It's a big issue for us, as we need to compare different things from different Creo View windows.

Creo View now launches as an independent application outside of the context of a browser window.  Creating a new session will launch a new Creo View window rather than replace the existing one.  This provide the ability to have multiple Creo View sessions open on separate monitors as desired.
