Identifying Parent feature of Planar Cross Section

How can I find the parent plane of a planar cross-section?

I need to move a cross section, but I can't find out how it is defined. Since it is planar, Redefine is grayed out in the View Manager. You can't use Info, Feature or Info, Parent/Child on any cross sections listed in the View Manager.

I'm using WF2 M230.

Solution:

If you hold your mouse over the cross section in the dialog box for a few seconds a pop up tag will show up and it should tell you what datum plane it is using as a reference.

Thanks, David!

Comment: Great suggestion; I bet it isn't documented anywhere.

Please file an enhancement request.... I have submitted a request that cross sections show up as features, or like features in the model tree for the last 4 years. I keep getting ignored.

Andrew,I believe the problem you are dealing with has to do with Datums that were either addedto create the section or they were created on the fly. We have a standard practice of renaming these datums to the section name. To help identify what datum controls the section can be a pain. The easiest way that I have found so far is to right click on a datum in the model tree and select delete. You will get a pop up that says do you really want to do this (see below) so don't panic. Look in you message window and you will see a warning (in most cases) telling you what you are about to delete (see below). You must hit cancel before moving on!!!! In the example below I would then go and rename the datum to SECT_L - thus making it easier to find and modify latter. That is the only procedure that I have found to work every time. Get your users to rename their section datum to the name of the section and you will eliminate the hunting and pecking method.----------Not that it's any consolation to your dilemma; our internal modelling standards state that datum planes used for cross sections are to be named "XSEC_A", "XSEC_B", etc. and that those datum plane features are not to have any children other than the cross section itself ...

You could try displaying all datum planes and attempt to suppress those that appear to be coplanar with where the section is (if there are multiple datum planes running through the same location). When you hit the one that controls the location of the section a warning should flash by in the message area indicating that suppressing that datum will also disable the section (or something to that effect) then bail out of the suppress operation.

Is it possible to create a parameter that is only functional for an
individual user that they can only access?
