Toolpath Optimization

Toolpath Optimization

Howdy!

When creating NC sequences using the AutoDrill functionality, has anyone
found a way to optimize sequences that use the same tool??

Process Manager has the "merge" function but it does not work with
sequences created from AutoDrill.

Since AutoDrill has been around longer than Process Manager, I would think
there has to be a way to do this.

Any help?

RE: Toolpath Optimization

Hi Todd,

From the second panel that shows up, try using the option "Auto Reorder".
Also, uncheck "Consider Orientation".

This should make sure that all same tools that can be grouped together are
grouped together. Some tools may stay seperated because of the process that
you define. So the reorder will never break the process order just to
satisfy keeping same tools grouped.

I hope this helps.

Toolpath Optimization

Good Morning Charles!

Thanks for the suggestion. This works great for putting tools and their
related NC sequences in sequential order............ minimizing tool
changes.

However, tool path is not optimized. Say, for example, I "re-order" and the
first four sequences in the table are all "spotting" routines using Tool#1.

Play path of this group and Tool#1 will execute sequences 1-4 in that order,
just like it logically should. What we would like to do from this point is
"merge" sequence 1-4 so that Tool#1 travels the shortest distance between
all hole locations represented in the first four sequences. Typically you
could skip this step and your machine operator would be none the wiser.
However, when dealing with work pieces > 100", inefficient tool path becomes
very relevant.

WF2, in Process Manager, has a "merge" function that accomplishes exactly
what we're looking for. The problem being, it does not work with sequences
being driven from the Auto Drill hole table.

Being the eternal optimist, I'm convinced there's a way to do this. I just
haven't been able to figure it out................YET!

Am I being too optimistic?
