Sheet Metal Rip Features

Anyone have any good reference material on the various rip features in Pro|E?  I must be dumber than a box of rocks, but no matter what I do the rip features fail.  I'm trying to create a solid, convert by shelling then rip the appropriate edges to create something developable.  But no matter what edge I pick or what the surrounding geometry looks like, the rip fails.  No feedback, just "can't construct feature" or something.

The help is useless as it simply gives the step by step on using the tool and nothing on what kind of edges will rip or how to select edges or chains to get rips to work.  I can do work arounds with several sheet metal cuts, pre-conversion rounds and surface rips for removing the rounds, but I have a feeling that I'm missing a simpler workflow.
