working on scanned datas

Hello,

I'll have soon to work on STL files in order to modify them soon.

The subject is a kind of prothesis I will have to modify.
The aim is to add some mechanical fixtures, make some holes...
The shape is a human part body shape (jaw) and is not easy to translate into nurbs surfaces.

I'll probably can be helped by a company that uses Geomagic.
I can also use Rex and Isdx.
I don't have files yet.
So, I can't figure easily what would be a good (the best approach).

1/ trying to transform point could into nurbs surface (as ProE can handle them).
Then it would be an usual work to make some geometrical modifications.
Last step would be to make an Stl file for manufacturing.

2/ an other idea was to make an assembly with stl file
Then, it would be possible to make some curves and quilts on this polygonal surface.
After that, I could make several shapes and transform them to Stl files (in separated parts).
Then, I could use Geomagic (for example) to add or remove those shapes from my first one.

So, any advice on what method would be more efficient or something else ?
Thanks,
GB
