MOST ANNOYING THINGS WITH CREO

Annoying=slows me down.

1. Select detail/assembly - right click - select edit - Dimension is shown outside from visible area on the screen. You have to search for it. Why dimension(s) cannot be shown within visible area on the screen?

2. Select detail/assembly - right click - select edit - selecting filter is set to ALL. It should be set to DIMENSIONS. Is there any other reason I want to use edit command in first place? NO!

3. Moving assemblies to a different order - you cannot place it in between two other assemblies very easy. I always end up placing assembly inside other one instead in between.

4. When distance is measured, measurement is shown BEHIND measurement window and you have to move the window before seeing the value.

5. Importing STEP or any CAD exchange file - if you select template file it will be also used when you make new file. And system is set to use our standard template for new details not for purchased details. You have to change it to desired template. But, if you import STEP file again, template previously selected for previous STEP file does not change, which is OK. So, why it changes when I want to make new detail?

6. Make a detail and a drawing for that detail. Save detail several times. Rename detail and see what you'll get. All instances of detail are renamed but drawing file is not. Creo knows there are additional instances of detail and renames them but it does not know that drawing file exists? Do I really ask too much?

7. When working on one detail/assembly, all of the sudden, Creo changes focus to different detail/assembly that is also opened. And it is out of focus as well. I have to re-select my previously active window.

8. Order of opened details/assemblies is wrong. I open several assemblies/details windows. When I work on assembly and I open detail to work on it, after I close that window I want Creo to return to previously opened window, not the very first one that was opened.

9. In drawing mode, unless you are on right tab, you cannot select items on the drawing. For example, you have to select Table tab in order to be able to select table. It should be other way around. When table is selected, Creo should put focus on Table tab.

10. Why "Mate" name contrain is removed? Now, I have to think twice before I choose right contrain to alter.

11. When two surfaces are constrained NORMAL constrain is default instead of mate (or should I say coincident?).

12. Notification windows should not display anymore after I select check box "In future do not show this message". But, it still does.

13. When pressed Esc buton while in skecth mode, Creo will go out without asking to confim it. On other hand, it asks to confirm cancel command even when it is not needed.

14. When measuring, after pressing middle button (as in WF4) measurement window does not close.

15. With AMD graphics cards, model three window goes black an you have to click on each item/feature blindly until they show up.

This list was made while I was working.

Re: MOST ANNOYING THINGS WITH CREO

That's a great list, and very valid. I imagine every user could easily find 100 or more items like that. Issues that have been around for many revs too. In reality, PTC does not care. PTC does not care one bit about existing customers.

I know this reply is to a old post but the same is true today.

PTC has not improved. It's no wonder Solidworks, NX have kicked its butt.

Re: MOST ANNOYING THINGS WITH CREO

To add a few more:

16. Who cares if file name is in CASE letters or small ones?

17. What is the longest file name we can use in Creo? Why the limit?

18. When holes are patterned as a threaded ones, you cannot change them to plain ones unless you remove pattern first. Why?

19. Why do I have to select part before assigning color?

As for the GUI, I do not have a problem with it. I configured it to my liking so it is not annoying anymore.

Re: MOST ANNOYING THINGS WITH CREO

You were able to eliminate the ribbon, and the stupendously absurd tabs? Evey time I'm zoomed in on a view, and try to do something, I try and select it, then realize I have to be in the right friggin' tab to do anything. And then, I have to remember exactly WHICH tab. Makes me want to throw things. That is the biggest time-waster ever, and extremely frustrating. So, if you've gotten rid of it, please tell me how.

Highlighted

Re: MOST ANNOYING THINGS WITH CREO

I did not get rid of anything. I just set up MODEL tab and MAPKEYS to my liking and needs. Now, I barely switch from MODEL tab when designing. Making drawings is different story though ...

I just do not see anything revolutionary (as PTC is saying) in this software. Maybe they consider this ribbon style menu revolutionary because they come from Unix? I've been using Pro/E since Wildfire 2.0 and they still did not make this software right. If I did not work on Catia and Inventor maybe I would've not complain this much but ...

Re: MOST ANNOYING THINGS WITH CREO

Ahhh. Yeah, I don't find the modeling nowhere near as offensive, though there are still things that are a lot less functional than WF4, with few real-world gains. But drawing mode is just appallingly bad. there's no other way to describe it. For drawings, it's bad enough where I'd almost rather use AutoCAD or solidworks.....and that's bad.

The person/people at microsoft who pushed for ribbons deserve to die a miserable and painful death for their crimes against humanity. It is an embarassment to software engineers everywhere whenever other programs copy that absurd device.

Things 'worked' in WF (as well as could be expected ... usually). It is mind boggling how PTC has crippled their product with the transition to Creo. Our productivity went down the toilet when we were forced into Creo. Part of that is relearning something we used to be proficiant at, but much of it is also due to the software being worse than before, particularly drawings.

It's not just us or Creo either. Someone within our company has spent considerable time developing a Ribbon add-in for Powerpoint that basically puts all the tools you want into a single toolbar (as well as some nice company-specific stuff).

From the latest manual for this add-in:

Many people struggle to use the new Ribbon interface efficiently due to:

  • The low density of controls means controls are spread thinly between multiple tabs (meaning more mouse clicks)
  • Contextual Tabs appear only when certain content is selected (e.g. Table Tools, Chart Tools, Picture Tools, etc.) so many controls are not always visible, making it harder to remember their location
  • The horizontal arrangement of the ribbon makes it harder to “read” than the vertical arrangement of menus in Office 2003, making rarely used controls harder to find
  • The dynamic nature of the Ribbon means PowerPoint is continually trying to second guess what the user will want to do next

I agree with Danilo and Greg.
I have increased about 30% the time for the drawing,
not to mention other things,
who pays me?

I do not like CAD INVENTOR and Guglielmo Cancelli products,
because the comands are inside the drawers, very tedious to open and close.
Upgrade fromm wf4 to creo2
and I find myself using a PTC-INVENTOR-OFFICE.

But at least there is still a way to keep stopped the positions of the buttons?

The My thoughts:

The people who built Creo does not work in the world of CAD.

If it is applying selected colour directly to entire part, It will be difficult for you to apply separate colour on a selected surface.

What is wrong using CRTL and SHIFT buttons if you want to select certain surfaces only? How often do you change color on surfaces instead of whole part?

Hi,

That is quite a list. If you create a individual Product Ideas for the above items, you can get this in front of Product Management if it affects the larger Creo user base. A simple copy and paste should minimize any extra effort on your part. Infact, some of these may already exist as Ideas and all you would have to do is vote them up.

Dan,

I do not think that my list has anything to do with new "features" that Creo might/should have. I consider all these annoyances as a bugs or glitches that affect my work.

There is config.pro option that controls when normal constrain appears. It is not prfect solution but for me works most of the time.

comp_angle_offset_eps 45

Here is my addition of annoyances:

  • decimal separator for numbers in Creo is not the same as on the rest on the system. We use comma for decimal separator and not the dot.
  • PLEASE make the 1 click command for export sheetmetal flat state to DXF
  • detailed view does not show solid hatch. It is essential for sheetmetal drawings.
  • graphic is blinking almost like in i2 version

That is a huge pain in the ass. I have to hit control for everything I select and if I want to measure to something else I have to either go into the measure ribbon bar and remove the second feature and then select my new object or just start over...

Re: MOST ANNOYING THINGS WITH CREO

Exactly! What is function of control key if I have to reset the measurements? It should be to connect between two features and if I want to check some other dimensions I start with click on one feature and connect it with control key and click on second feature. And again, middle click to close measurement window.

Hi Danilo...

If you look at the very bottom of this thread, you'll see a message directly from Rosemary Astheimer who is the PTC Product Line Manager in charge of the Measurement Tool. Apparently she's offered to discuss one user's problems face to face at the PTC Live Global event in June. See the link below and scroll all the way to the bottom...

http://communities.ptc.com/message/195268#195268

If you'll submit your request and perhaps a screenshot or two demonstrating the issue, I'll be glad to go seek out Rosemary and take your concerns directly to her. Submit your requests and screenshots to the thread here:

Re: MOST ANNOYING THINGS WITH CREO

Idea for HOLE command:

How to make a C'bore hole in Creo currently:

1. Click Hole button

2. Select first handle and move it to first reference

3. Select second handle and move to second reference

4. Click "Create standard hole icon" button

5. Select hole size

6. Click Counter bore button (this is where you should be done clicking)

7. Click Through hole button

8. De-select Thread button

9. Click "Create clearance hole" button

10. Select Shape tap

11. Select Medium fit

12. Click Check mark button

It takes TWELVE clicks for one simple c'bore hole?!?!?

There should be MAX 4 clicks. Select hole icon, select hole size and select hole shape (c'bore, c'sink, plain-default).

If plain hole is selected, you just have to select yes/no for thread (default YES) and depth either in ratio option "THRU, 1D, 2D, 3D" or to type in value for hole and thread depth. I would like to be able to select default value for RATIO option.

If C'bore or C'sink hole is selected, thread option is set to NO and depth is set to THRU. If you wand to change something you have options but this should be default. If you want to have thread in C'bore hole, thread by default should be through.

How often do we use M50X2.5? Or maybe M26x1.5? Make an option to have favorite hole sizes (user's choice) in list (not drop down combo box) and we can select the most used hole sizes very quickly and easy. Like, M3x0.5, M4x0.7, M6x1, M8x1.25, M8x1.0, etc.

Also, about selecting references. Why we shouldn't use CONTROL key on my keyboard? I click on HOLE button, select surface to place the hole and while holding CONTROL key I select two references, and I am done. You can leave handles but this is more natural approach.

All other options can stay as they are so we still have different capabilities and features for holes but at least for the ones we are using every minute we should have something easy and quick.

So, lets say PTC did what I asked.

Here we go again:

How to make a C'bore hole in Creo (not very long in future):

1. Click Hole button

2. CTRL + Reference 1 + Reference 2

3. Select hole size from FAVORITE list

4. Select hole SHAPE

5. Click ACCEPT (Green check mark) or middle mouse button

FIVE clicks for C'bore/C'sink hole!

How to make a regular threaded hole in Creo (not very long in future):

1. Click Hole button

2. CTRL + Reference 1 + Reference 2

3. Select hole size from FAVORITE list (default is threaded hole, 2D depth)

4. Click ACCEPT (Green check mark) or middle mouse button

FOUR clicks for regular threaded hole!

Can it be any easier than this?

Re: MOST ANNOYING THINGS WITH CREO

Choosing a Cad system, is expensive. Its a real pain, to change flawor from one to the other.

After about 13 months of really working with the system, we can now do a model. Set up a new project, print a parts bom, formatted. Export to excel. Ohh year, and have at least a reasonable succes rate, at having creo Update our models.

We have an inventor license in the house, and we always do a ->step->inventor->check volume/mass.

Basicly we( I ) dont trust Creo. We have to many examples, of parts not updating, things falling appart without errors, things not saving. and so on.

Add to this, that the documentation only documents how it should work, not why it doesnt, and my days are spent fighting Creo instead of being creative.

There is, in my support group, a real fealing of "given up". We dont suspect program behavior to get better, we destroy our hands clicking and clicking to work around the crappo in creo. And any time we get to where we want to go, the support says. There, this is how to do it :-). Now in my case, i just have to do this manual click click click monster 500 times more (when there should be an easyer way)

Add to list

20. When working with config files, the changed configs, arent saved to the file they are set in, nor to your personal dir. They are sendt to the current workdir. This means that a user can change someting, and either it will have no effect (because its overwritten from his personal config.pro) or a change in genneral settings wont be enabled, because they are set in the normal config.pro

21. No way of creating read only libraries of std parts (I found one, but it aint pretty)

22. Menumanager comes up, with an "accept", "ok" or "continue" and nothing else. Now i have to go to the faaaar left of my screen, to click.

23. Poooooor integration with windows. Changing from one window to the other, makes windows unresponsive

25. I have divided a line in sketcher using a point, why is it not possible to un-divide it.

26.many forms or menus doesn't even give least clue if they are selected by default or user have to input something, feels really dumb to have an epiphany "oh software is asking for input" after 5 mins of starring at it.

27.form menus should have one convenient place for appearing regularly ,not all over the the screen, hiding everything behind them.like when sketcher has to be initiated menus should appear on lower left corner ,why does user have to drag them diagonally across the screen.

28.only function of form menus appearing in sketcher is to cancel the feature altogether, for exiting sketches they are not even required.still they appear in sketcher windows.above sketch tools.

29.relations don't highlight where did they find error,it's like postmortem everything.just one vague statement.

30. set working directory, why is not possible to set the opened directory as working directory, have to travel one level up,find that directory in browser then set it.

Re: MOST ANNOYING THINGS WITH CREO

Alright guys...

This is one massive gripe post. We've all been here before. We've seen the problems and we can document them. The problem is, writing them here is about as good as writing them on slips of paper, slipping them into empty bottles, and setting them afloat in the ocean hoping PTC eventually gets them.

In other words... this is the wrong way to go about affecting change. Oh sure, it's fun. Certainly it makes you feel better to vent your frustrations but if you really want solutions, you have to go about it another way.

There are two ways to get these issues in front of someone:

  • Use the PTC Product Idea Submission process which is documented HERE
  • Join the PTC User Technical Committees to have access to the product line managers and developers directly.

I am wary about the first option because it involves making sure people vote up your idea. The ideas way down on the list don't get much consideration. You need to garner votes to push your ideas up the list so they get seen. Joining the technical committees is more of a commitment, but it's also the more direct approach.

In just over one month, the PTC/User Technical Committees will meet again in Anaheim directly after the conclusion of the PTC Live Global conference. Most of the committees already solicited ideas for discussions for these meetings. However, just like last time, I'll compile a list of requested enhancements and hand-carry them to as many meetings as I can. I'll do my best to put your requests in front of the people who can enact them. But... you have to put these requests down in a form I can understand... and you may need to give me some examples so I'm not standing in front of PTC looking stupid tossing out problems without being able to demonstrate them.

Please head over to this new thread HERE to submit your enhancement requests and bug fixes. I'll catalog the submissions and take them personally to the PTC User Technical Committee meetings in June. You can also submit your ideas using the PTC Product Idea Submission area of PTC Community. For best results, I'd say do both!

Thanks...

-Brian
