what's meant by workplane and how is it used?

I struggled about the workplane feature. What do I need this for?

A workplane is a plane that you typically use to create 2D profiles. You start your design with a workplane to generate a 2D profile on it. You use this profile to either apply either an extrude or a rotate command on it to receive a 3D model. Once you have a model you use workplanes to position them anywhere on that model to generate more profile to evolve your 3D representation of your design.
