Parametric Technologies, a maker of computer-aided design and operational software for businesses, has hired banking advisers and is approaching potential bidders in an attempt to sell itself for more than $2bn, according to people with knowledge of the process.

Parametric sells software that speeds and smoothes manufacturing processes and product development for customers ranging from Toyota and Bang & Olufsen to the retailer JC Penney.

Saw this yesterday at MCAD Central. Don't know what to think at this
point. Makes me a bit nervous as to the future of Pro|E.

It is a cash grab for the executives.

Have to agree with Dave. Sounds like the executives are making sure they have a Golden Parachute. They've hired Goldman Sachs to try to woo potential buyers. More details are here (the link supplied earlier didn't work for me, may not have for others either):

Makes me wonder if Ishouldhold off on migrating to Windchill (off Intralink 3.4)...again / still. If some current competitor were tobuy PTC, I doubt they'd beencouraging current Intralink 3.x customers to migrate to their newly acquired PLM application instead of their own existing PLM application. Also makes me curious as to what kind of sweet deal they offered EADSto recently beat out Dassaultand Siemensto get Windchill in there. Almost sounds like a strategic business move by PTC to win a very high profile implementation over the competittion with the end goal being to drive up share prices in anticipation of selling themselves to the highest bidder. It will certainly be interesting to see how this pans out. Siemens bought UGS, HP bought EDS who is going to buy PTC? What if nobody bites? Now that would be embarassing.

I'll bet IBM (CATIA/Dassault/MatrixOne/SmartTeam/Solidworks) would be
interested in that market share (and they just might be able to cover that
$2 billion price tag).

It sure would be nice if Siemens bought PTC too! Maybe we'd get a little
better integration? It would suck for all those Windchill customers that
would have to switch to Teamcenter though.

Autodesk has had its eye on PTC for a long time and they've got mega $$$

_____

So hypothetically

Autodesk has Inventor / PTC has WildFire

We now have InventFire ( Pan to Tom Hanks jumping around in the sand
yelling "I have Made Fire!")

Who are PTC's biggest customers? Could any of them come up with
2-bills for the acquisition? Toyota?

What about Microsoft or Google? Google has Google SketchUp and
applications like Google Earth. Does Microsoft have any CAD tools, do
they want any?

AutoDesk? Lets see how their tools have evolved: AutoCAD
3D-->Mechanical Desktop-> Inventor-> Pro/Engineer?

Dave

What do you say we, as users , chip in and buy it like Harley people
bought Harley back.
Then we could make it the way it should be..................

I get it, kind of like donating money to buy a coworker a cake or
something. Sure, why not, I've got an extra ten million bucks I'm not
using.

The "Autodesk seeking to buy PTC" rumor is one that surfaces now and again. Now PTC is looking to be bought. Funny thing is I asked the president of our local Autodesk VAR about that a few months ago and despite her anti-PTC mantra, shebasically impliedthe rumor exists for a reason (along with the sort of smirk that implied PTC's products would be better as a result). At this point, anything is possible. Keep in mind, too, that PTC's big push in the past few years has been PLM, not CAD, so that widens the field of potential buyers.

Wait a minute 2 billion dollars, divided amongst a claimed50,000 customers is only $40,000 each. Wait a minute, I pay waymore than that in maintenance every year. Why don't we just pool our maintenance $ and buy PTC? (LOL)

Seriously, I would chip in.

Pro-E is a great tool. Management is the issue with this company, not the product. Switch out the management, you could revive the company, similar to what happened at Harley.

Or how about adobe? They seem to have an eye on 3d with their acrobat 3d
product

Isn't this just typical of "greedy management"? WOULD those same
managers be looking to sell if they didn't have "golden parachutes"?
I'm certainly no MBA, but I thought companies that were looking to sell
themselves were generally in some difficulties, where selling made
sense... This all sounds like the wolf's running the hen house. Or am
I missing something? Are not the ONLY people benefiting from the sale
the same people deciding to sell? WHAT does a sale DO for PTC as a
whole? Seems like some serious conflict of interest...

Any way, just my little, uninformed, non-business-like, opinion... 😉
hmmm... is it the Friday rant already? LOL...

I used Inventor for years before moving over to Pro/E.

IMHO, I think Autodesk + PTC would make an incredible package. Drawing from Inventor + modeling & surfacing from Pro/E.

I'd think the best time to sell is when you're doing well. That would
make the price higher. Who wants to buy a company on the ropes and
assume that risk?

The benefits to us depends on the buyer and their intentions. Are they
buying to eliminate a competitor? Bad news. Are they buying to expand
their offering? Maybe good new.

All those recent acquisitions make PTC into a well rounded player with
something to offer a lot for people which may make them more attractive
to buy. I'm not sure that that was the point, but maybe ..

There is very little information out there on this. In fact, I think
we've written more words on it here and at MCAD Central than exist in
print in the various trade mags out there. May turn into nothing, who
knows?

I'm hearing from several sources that this is a false rumor started by some unhappy competitors.
