surfacing seq. constant step over

I have a domed surface, approx. radius of the sphere is 18 inches, and
the surface is a D shaped piece of the dome with the straight side of
the D measuring 5 inches. I am trying to put a cosmetic ribbed finish
on the thing (perpendicular to the straight side), using a 1 inch ball
end mill and a step over set to 0.062".

The problem is, when I do a Play Path:Screen Play the cutter path has a
very irregular step over. I use the position tool icon and place the
cutter on one tool path look at the CL data, then place it on the next
pass and the distance between the two is only 0.013" for some paths,
0.23 for others and still 0.062 for others, not the constant 0.062 that
I have specified in the params. The scallop height is set to a - so in
my thinking that shouldn't be affecting the toolpath - am I missing
something else?
