Limited Password Protection Functionality for Mathcad Prime Calculation Worksheets

Limited Password Protection Functionality for Mathcad Prime Calculation Worksheets

Mathcad Prime 7.0.0.0 currently has very limited capabilities for password-protecting calculation worksheets. There are two major issues my company would like to file for an enhancement request. The first being that the existing password is a very surface-level security measure that can easily be worked around. If you know the password for the protected areas within a Mathcad, you can open it from any system because it is not tied to an individual host ID. For example, if I know the password and email myself a bunch of Mathcad's before I leave a company. I can then open those Mathcad's at my house because I know the password. The suggested solution for this problem is that the protection for the Mathcad calculation worksheet needs to also be linked to the Mathcad license (Host ID). This would provide companies with tighter control over who has access to confidential engineering worksheet calculations. The second issue is that there is no direct way to make an entire worksheet password protected. Currently, only individual protected regions inside a Mathcad area can be password protected from viewing and editing. This issue can be resolved by increasing the overall capabilities of the password protection functionality.

My Company has an extensive suite of around 500 Mathcad 15 worksheets which contain considerable IP.  These are protected against theft by having each worksheet call a hidden reference worksheet on the main server which effectively acts as a license file. We are currently converting these MCD15 worksheets to Prime 9 but cannot use a similar approach due to ability in prime to cache reference worksheets.  The above suggestion to link the prime worksheet to the Mathcad license file is therefore strongly supported.  I'm certain there are many large organizations who would appreciate the ability to  protect their worksheet libraries against theft (i.e. use on outside PCs / servers) in this way.  This upgrade should therefore be given high priority.
