Hello,

I think that M' should try to adhere as much as possibl to the de-facto standards for user interfaces and shortcut. Maybe should be added an option to change the schortcuts as in M15 to make the environment comfortable for people caming from <M15.

I start with a little list (my suggestion is to take inspiration from products like openoffice that is often up to date for the most common shortcuts).

- calculate now should be F5 (usually reload), and recalculate shift-F5

- shift-ctrl-v paste special (to paste whitout formattation and so)

- ctrl-F4 close current sheet

- shift-ctrl-s save as..

- shift-ctrl-p print preview

regards, Loris.

other requirements

- right click for properties (already asked, but repetita juvant)

- Properties for object in selected group: when I have a group of objects selected, I expect to be able to modify all the common properties (a example, if I select some radiobutton I expect to be able to change all groupid at once, without having to change the property individually.

- univocous property behaviour: sometimes as example with listbox objects, clicking right when the object is non selected, selected (dotted line) or selected(continuos line) give different behaviour. example, is not possible to edit vbscript. not nice when you debug, in particular if you don't know.

regards, Loris.

My response to your points.

  • Don't see the need in changing
  • As in M15? It'll be in future release
  • No need at all
  • M15 has it. It'll be in future release
  • M15 has it. It'll be in future release

Hi Mike,

I think that, if PTC want to make a product chosen from customers, they should try to create something that match the needs of the bigger number of users as possible. I think that in 2011 you should make all possible effort to make the software powerful and comfortable to use.
For the usefulness, ok they have to work a lot, since at least in M' the "what does" is an order of magnitude shorter than "what dosn't", and I'm not talking about exotic functions, but very basic features, as 3dplots, that make it completely unuseful for a huge number of applications (I know, it will be implemented in M'2, but this is the actual situation).

For the comfort, it is mainly due to the user interface and behaviour. You are used to right click to an object to open properties. If it doesnt work, you are upset. You are used to cut paste with ctrl-c ctrl-v, if they don't work you are upset. And finally you stop to use it if you find another option.

This is why all software are going to "standardize" a set of shortcut. It is a free way to make the user confortable.

In 199x there was a lot of mess and users were used to accept a lot of diifferent conventions, but the time is passed.. I remmeber an electronic cad that had the weirdiest behaviour for me. single click to one object=select (and this is ok). Double click on an object = DELETE (worst again.. not just double click, but also click on alredy selected object). After tried it for 10 minutes (and placed the same component for the third time because I inadvertitely deleted it) I deleted it.

This is why I suggest to support the "standard" shortcuts, as default options for new users.

for the other points:

- now M15 support only the unformatted paste, maybe it would be nice to support also the formatted paste (of course, when M' will support formattation)

- why don't you need to close a single sheet? there is the X to close the window, I don't see why not add also a proper shortcut.

- there is no shortcut in M15 for save as (or, it is not sh-ctr-s).

A question.. Do you know if there is a way to delete a transposal from a formula?

When I have to correct something I usually play a lot with del / backspace / spacebar / arrows / undo and usually finally succeed in correcting, but for transpose the only way I found is trtanspose again (but is ugly to see) or copy argument, delete all, paste argument.

- when disabling evaluation fade the disabled part, instead just placing a small square taht sometimes disappares in messy sheet.

- add an easy way to delete transpose, possibly coherent with the editing of other parts.

I don't see a problem with this. Just select what is being transposed, with the insertion point on the right, and hit the Del key.

It works, thanks.

I probably use more the backspace for corrections..

Thanks. L.

I think some operators can only easily (or at all!) be deleted with the Del key, because they are always "to the right". Examples are transpose, inverse, column, vectorize, complex conjugate, etc.

Because that works. If I want to close the worksheet that I am working on, I just hit the X - I don't see an issue.

- there is no shortcut in M15 for save as (or, it is not sh-ctr-s).

Ctrl+s brings the SaveAs box up for me.

Richard has already answered this.

Cheers
