Calculating Water Amount for Borehole Drilling

This worksheet will:

  • Calculate the amount of water in air on an air drilling operation from thermodynamics 
  • Apply to  
  • Perform using "Thermodynamic Properties of Pure Water", atmospheric pressure, temperature conversion, Clausius Claperyon Equation, Dalton's Law, etc.

While drilling into a borehole, it is ordinary practice to inject a particular amount of water into the borehole being drilled. This is done to control dust and debris while drilling, and depending on the purpose of the drilling, helps to get larger samples of natural materials. This worksheet using PTC Mathcad finds the particular amount of water in the air on an air drilling operation from thermodynamics, to be injected. 

To begin, the worksheet references “Thermodynamic Properties of Pure Water” CRC 57th Ed and supplies you with calorie per mole of the different elements. Next you are given the atmospheric pressure and the degrees in Fahrenheit at the surface. You are then shown how to convert this into Kelvin.

You are then shown how to calculate the percentage of water in the air using the Clausius Claperyon Equation to first determine the correct vapor pressure for temperature. After that, you can calculate the d ensity of the air and then the amount of water to inject. You are then shown how to check your work.

All notation, formulas, calculations, and solutions, have been provided to help you in your own calculations.
