I have already produced an acceptable finite differences approach in Mathcad, but it should in principle be a lot more laborious than using the PDESOLVE block successfully for the two equations (temperature and concentration). I have used Pdesolve just fine for single PDEs in the past.
I'd guess so. Here's an example from the Mathcad 11 handbook:
