Finding the Shear Force and Bending Moment Along a Beam
By Mathcad Staff
This worksheet will:
- Determine the expression of the distributed load as a function of position x and find the shear force and bending moment
- Apply to civil and mechanical engineering along with general academia
- Perform using bending moment, shear force, distributed load, load representation, linear function, free-body diagram, beams, equilibrium equation, shear force diagram, bending moment diagram, etc.
This worksheet using Mathcad provides you with an example of how the shear force and the bending moment along a simply supported beam can be determined as a function of the distance from one end. To solve, the worksheet first shows you how to determine the expression of the distributed load as a function of position x. The distributed load can then be represented by one resultant force acting at a specific location. After that, the worksheet shows you how to find the reactions from the equilibrium equations.
Once you have solved the previous calculations, you can determine the shear force and bending moment as functions of x for the entire beam. You are then shown how to draw a shear force diagram and a bending moment diagram. All notation, data, formulas, solutions, and graphs are provided to aid you in your own calculations.
