Prime 8: New Instances instead of new worksheets

Prime 8: New Instances instead of new worksheets

hi,

I recently installed Mathcad Prime 8 and every time I open a Mathcad sheet, it creates a new instance of Mathcad instead of opening a new worksheet in the already open Mathcad I have.

For example,

If I open three Mathcad files, I end up with three instances of Mathcad instead of just one with three worksheet open.

I have been looking around and it seems I could change the registry but I dont have access to it. Also, I dont remember doing this before. It may be due to the way Windows 10 treats Mathcad as an App?

Thanks!

Hi,

start MCP8 from Start menu and use File > Open from MCP8.

That depends on how you "open" the Prime sheets.

If you open them by double clicking the sheet file and hoping that the correct file association is stored in Windows' registry, then you will end up with separate instances of the application.

If you want to have just one instance of the app, you have to open all files after the first one via the menu from within Prime.

Thanks for your reply.

I double click a file and then it opens a new Mathcad instance. I thought that the default behaviour of Prime 8 is to:

a) Double click a file and then open a new instance of Prime 8

b) Double click another file and open a new worksheet within the already opened Prime 8.

I checked with others and their program behave as I described in a) and b). It is just my program that does not behave as it should be.

Funnily enough, in this thread:

The user is asking how to do the opposite of what I want.

Regards,

Hi,

my last tip ... compare registry settings on your computer versus registry settings on another computer.

  • run regedit
  • go to Computer\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MathcadPrime.exe\shell\Open\command folder -AND- look at (Default) value
  • go to Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\MathcadPrime.exe\shell\Open\command folder -AND- look at (Default) value

Oooops! You are right!
When I double click multiple files they would also be opened in just the same Prime instance.
Sorry about the confusion.

Concerning the registry settings as mentioned by Martin:

Computer\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MathcadPrime.exe\shell\Open\command

The entry for (Standard)  is  "C:\Program Files\PTC\Mathcad Prime 10.0.1.0\MathcadPrime.exe" "%1"

Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\MathcadPrime.exe\shell\Open

The entry for (Standard)  is  Open

Thank you both for your replies.

It seems that I have the same values. I attached screenshots to make sure I am doing this properly.

Computer\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MathcadPrime.exe\shell\Open\

Value: Open

Computer\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MathcadPrime.exe\shell\Open\command

Value: "C:\Program Files\PTC\Mathcad Prime 8.0.0.0\MathcadPrime.exe" "%1"

Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\MathcadPrime.exe\shell\Open

Value: Open

Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\MathcadPrime.exe\shell\Open\command

Value: "C:\Program Files\PTC\Mathcad Prime 8.0.0.0\MathcadPrime.exe" "%1"

Could it be that some option from installation was changed from its default value? maybe it is related to Windows 10? I can request a clean installation hoping the issue sorts itself out.

Another weird behaviour that I noticed after using Mathcad in the new laptop is that I can't use Excel Components at all (even on a blank sheet). I get "Excel is busy" error but I think Mathcad can't connect with Excel at all.
