State-based Workflows: Modular Business Process Modeling in PTC Windchill

PTC Windchill workflows offer the tools and functionality to simplify the complex process of modeling business processes. But organizations continually need to be evolving business processes to keep pace with the changing world. And this is when they discover it can be difficult to update existing PTC Windchill workflows to support the changing needs of their business.  In this presentation, the presenter will discuss an approach to implementing PTC Windchill workflows in a way that naturally and easily supports the refinement and evolution of a business process over time – using state-based workflows. In this state-based approach, the business process is implemented as a separate workflow associated with each state (or stage) of the process. A state-based workflow approach can offer benefits that the traditional “lifetime workflow” approach can’t – especially when it comes to evolving a process over time. Attendees will learn how using state-based workflows provide a modular framework to support the evolution and refinement of a business process.  Plus, attendees will gain an understanding how this approach helps solve other common challenges encountered by PTC Windchill administrators and users. To demonstrate these benefits, the presenter will examine a SRAM implementation that uses a state-based workflow approach, and discuss how they have been able to effectively evolve a business process and manage PTC Windchill data using the state-based workflow approach. Through a discussion of the key elements of the SRAM implementation, attendees will gain a better understanding of what it takes to use state-based workflows in PTC Windchill, and the benefits the approach offers.
