The play trail file icon is greyed out on my Student Edition

How do I enable so I can play trail files?

You don't. It is that way to prevent users from using recordings. I don't know why, but that's the case.

You can record mapkeys and those can be quite long.

Or you can use tools like AutoIt to drive the interface in programmable ways.
