Using PTC Mathcad for Water Chemistry Problems

By D.M. Griffin, Jr.

About this worksheet:

  • Determines the composition and pH of water saturated with calcite and subject to a range of CO2 partial pressures
  • Applicable in chemistry, chemical engineering, and environmental engineering
  • Performs Henry's law, solubility, dissociation, and solve blocks

This worksheet using PTC Mathcad helps you to determine the composition and pH of water saturated with calcite and subject to a range of CO2 partial pressures. This is necessary for the treatment and production of potable water involves removing contaminants or modifying property (pH). It is also necessary to avoid damage to water distribution systems, hot water heaters, etc.

This worksheet allows you to define the constants and properties of the compounds.  You can write a system of equations that are sufficient to solve the number of unknowns. You can use the find function to solve for the concentration of carbonate species across varying partial pressures. Specifically you will:

  • Define values for the constants to be used
  • Provide initial guesses for each unknown in the system of equations
  • Write the equations to be solved
  • Set up a solve block

This worksheet takes you through an example with step by step notation, and provides you with all data, solutions, formulas, and graphs.
