can someone please show me how to work this problem.

You have an equation, e.g., two things are equal in value. If you add, subtract, multiply or divide two equal things by the same amount, you still get an equality.

This means that you can take your equation above and multiply both sides by 13 and wind up with another equation. Likewise, multiplication of both sides by x+1 will result in another equation.
