Create Share Action For PTC Support Articles

Create Share Action For PTC Support Articles

When I view an Article on support.ptc.com, my only actions under Document Actions are Refresh Data and Subscribe to this Document.  My current method of "sharing" the article is to manually copy the URL and title into an email and send it.

Proposal: Create a Share Document action that does the following:

  1. Open the client email application
  2. Prepopulate subject with maybe some standard prefix and the Title of the article.
  3. Prepopulate body with Applies To and maybe Description.

I think this is a great idea and have forwarded it along to Pierre Maraninchi‌.

I'd add that it would also be nice to have a "direct link" type action that would allow you to copy and paste a clear URL (useful when arriving at a page from various redirects).

Matt,

Thanks for sharing the good idea. I'll see how I can add that to our eSupport Portal roadmap.

Thanks Caitlin, I thought so too, but going by the number of votes, not many others think so.  Ha

Hello Matt,

Thanks for sharing this idea. It's interesting that exactly the same request came through to me this morning from our PDM Technical Leader,  Bjoern Saupp, and originally requested by Ben Perry‌‌. It proves there is at least some appetite for this. Let's see how many others vote and comment.

I'll work with Pierre to get this idea prioritised.

Just a quick comment to inform you that we've started working on this request and we will release the feature in May or June

Pierre Maraninchi‌,

I see the Document Actions includes "Share by Email" now.

Two suggestions.

  1. Don't make the page reload every time the "Share by Email' link is clicked.  The new message pops up just fine in Outlook, then afterwards the support page loads all over again.  On slower internet connections, this is quite annoying.
  2. Make consider adding a "Copy Link" button.  I'm much more likely to need a valid URL to repost over at the PTC Community than I am to actually send an email.

Thanks!

Tom,

Thanks for the feedback. I'll see how I can squeeze  those on the roadmap and will post updates here.

After changing your logo and site look it is no more possible to add a comment to an article.

If you push Yes or No on question "Was this document helpful", nothing happens.

I have tried using Chrome, Firefox and Internet Explorer from two different PC.

Thanks Marco Tosin

We are looking into this right now!

Peter,

I have just added a comment to an article, so I can confirm that the issue is solved.

Thanks

Thanks guys.  Neat functionality.  I may have found a little bug with the Share by Email action.

Chrome version 52.0.2743.116 (latest/current version as of this posting)

  1. No thick email client
  2. Opened Document (CS56957 and maybe one other)
  3. Clicked Share by Email
  4. Results: Document page refreshed, setting source=articleshare to request parameter.  Nothing else.
  5. Notes: Under chrome://settings/handlers, nothing was listed and I couldn't modify the list.

  1. Installed Thunderbird
  2. Opened Document (CS56957)
  3. Clicked Share by Email
  4. Results: Document page refreshed, setting source=articleshare to request parameter.  Email client new message popup, prepopulated with subject and body.

Thanks Matthew Knight‌ for reporting the issue. Looks like we are not handling properly the exception when no thick client is installed on device. I'll report this to our infrastructure team.
