Did You Know? Enabling Ambient Occlusion

Ambient occlusion is a subtle effect that simulates shade in areas of a model that are obstructed by other parts of the model, giving it a more realistic look. In this post, a PTC expert describes how to enable ambient occlusion.

Here is a model before shading with reflections and ambient occlusion are enabled:

When Display Style is set to Shading With Reflections, you can enable ambient occlusion. Simply click Options. The PTC Creo Parameters Options dialog opens. On the left menu bar, select Model Display. Then, under the Real-time rendering settings heading, select the Enable ambient occlusion effect check box.

Ambient occlusion improves the realism of the display by shading or darkening areas in your model that are occluded by other items in the geometry. This helps make the model look more realistic.

To watch a demonstration of these steps, check out the video tutorial (“Ambient Occlusion is Available”) on PTC University's Learning Exchange. Note that you may need to register for a free account if you have not already.
