External Merge & AAX

Is the advanced assy extension (AAX) required to create an external merge feature?  A client without AAX can create a regular merge, but the "external" pick is grayed out.

That has been true for years...   I think...
I'll clarify that by saying... years ago I know it was true because
"External Copy Geom", and "External Merge" are functions that I use
regularly and I needed to purchase AAX with my license pack even though I
didn't need anything else from AAX.  (PTC's license scheme to force us to
purchase an extra module.   (Still a little miffed about that))
I assume its still true today because I'm still paying maintenance on that
module...   If someone tells us different,  then maybe I can drop the
module and save some dough.

I recall that same thing, Bernie. There were a LOT of people that were pissed off when that functionality was taken away and you were forced to upgrade to the AAX license. More ca$h for PTC of course.

You can't ever really drop a module. PTC will remember everything you ever bought and bill you for it ad infinitum. You can wrestle with them each and every year over how much you are willing to pay for maintenance. I did that for years, now all software issues have been outsourced to another group who knows nothing of our license history so they just blindly pay double what I used to negotiate.

PTC quality philosophy: We've upped our quality standards. Up yours.

We successfully downgraded 7 of our 8 seats, but only after dropping maintenance completely for 3+ years.  They got a lot more flexible after getting nothing from us for that time.  Funny thing is that I tried to get them to do it when we dropped our maintenance, but they wouldn’t budge.
