Import large .pts file and create surface/facets

Hi,

I've got a very large .pts file (more than a billion points).

When trying to import it inside Creo Parametric, it doesn't seem to recognise it.

Is there a limit on how many points it can handle?

Or is there a better way of doing this?

Currently, I'm using a different software to view these points. This is fine for viewing but when I try to export my design/model into it, that's when it gets annoying as I lose sketches, datums, etc. and it is very time-consuming to constraint/place my model inside the points cloud.

I'd appreciate any help on this.

Yes, there is a limit if you're not using REX.  See https://www.ptc.com/en/support/article?n=CS281410   14,043,584 points per point feature.   You can split the pts file into multiple files if necessary.

With REX there is not a limit (besides your computer setup).  See https://www.ptc.com/en/support/article?n=CS201117

I have a file with 33 236 358 points in it. I've tried importing 14,043,582 points at first and it couldn't.

Incrementally went down until till I received this warning "Can not include more than 30117 points"

SO the number is considerably smaller then the documentation in this case says.

The cases seem to be contradicting each other.

Is it contradicting or is it giving 2 different methods of importing.

The one with the 30k limit is "offset from coordinate system"

The other is Import in Get Data group drop-down list menu under Model tab

Thats what I see. I didn't verify.  The only time it came up for me, the supplier of the data file had a different solution for me to try before I ever tried the large import, so I never went any farther in that direction.
