Multi-Shot Injection Molded Part Modeling

Multi-Shot Injection Molded Part Modeling

I am going to be modeling a clamshell style injection molded part(s) that has a rubber overmold or multi-shot part to it for a hand grip. Wondering if anyone has any suggestions on how to model the base and overmolded portions of the model. Do you create separate models and assemble them to the base model or do you segregate the proe features for the overmolded portions of the model and leave both sub-molded portions in one model database?

Publish Geom or Merge Part

Hi Augie, I have done this a few times for Sony Eriksson and Motorola. I would recommend modelling a skeleton or Master Part which has the shared features (We call it a soap model). You can then either publish these features into the separate parts (Rubber over-moulding, antennae clips, battery cover, rear moulding etc). Or you could use the Merge Part command. The advantage of modelling in this way is that you know all parts are sharing the same data, so there is no risk of features not lining up. Good luck, Paul
