lm_license_file not set / PC can't see FlexLM license service
I encountered this problem around a month ago and the only immediate solution ended up being to start from scratch with the PC, that is re-install Win2K and all application software. Now I have a second PC exhibiting the same behavior and am trying to get to the root cause and hopefully an easier solution.
Symptoms: PTC applications can't get a license. While the PC is able to communicate with the server where the FlexLM license service is running (ping command, browse to the server) it can't see the FlexLM license service. This means I get an error if I simply try to re-install ProE or Intralink - the error indicating that the license server has no valid service. Running a ptcstatus command on the problematic PC comes back with "environmental variable LM_LICENSE_FILE is not set".
What I've tried: I found similar problems described here on the email exploder and as suggested, I have scanned for and removed spyware, removed a shopping / survey software, checked the PC's clock for accuracy and the PC has no local firewall installed or enabled. IT has looked at the system to see if some process is occupying port 7788 (the port the license service is set to communicate over by default) and there is nothing occupying that port.
I strongly suspect that in both cases the user installed something off the internet and that created the problem (both had a 3D dolphins screen saver installed and a piece of software called "RelevantKnowledge"). However, I've been unable to find a reasonable fix. I would like to have something other than starting from re-installing Win2K in case I encounter this a third time.
Any suggestions would be great. Thanks!
