references pop up

OK, This is a new one for me.

I created a new little model this morning. (about 60 features) This is a
fairly simple injection molded part complete with jump parting lines, full
draft and rounds.

Now, this afternoon, I'm trying to modify the sketch for Extrude (feature
13). How I want to modify the sketch will requires that I select an
additional reference axis to properly capture my design intent. so...
while in the sketch I select Sketch, References, and I get a warning that
says...
"The section has several dependent features. Adding or Deleting references
is not allowed." (attached is a picture)

What! I'm not allowed to modify a sketch because there are child
features???? Isn't that what the "re-route" function is for? Anyway...

Here's the specs: WF4, M160, I have Foundation, AAX, and ISDX licenses. I
have checked the "reference control" settings... and everything is set to
"all".

I'm quite sure that I have never seen this message before, and at this point
I am totally stumped as to what may have changed on my system to cause this
warning to pop up.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks!
Bernie

That message comes up not because of children, but because the feature
was copied and pasted with the 'dependent' option picked. It might also
have been mirrored as dependent.

Pro/E has done this as long as I've used it (~15 years). This is why I
never mirror or copy features as dependent.

Thanks Doug, I also received a similar reply from Dan Wolf.
This explaines exactly why I have never seen this message in my 15+ years.
Most of my experience is in advanced surfacing class "A" modeling of
cosmetic parts, but this was such a simple little part, I decided it would
be a good idea to just slam it out in solid mode. (which included mirroring
this particular feature)
Guess it wasn't such a good idea after all. (at lease the mirroring part)

Just don't understand why PTC would disable reference modification just
because a feature has been mirrored...

Thanks
Bernie

With mirroring, your best bet is for it to be the last item in the model
tree, then if you run across this issue, you can delete & re-create it with
minimal impact.

Actually, if the part is symmetric or nearly so and you want to mirror,
mirror the entire part by selecting the part name at the top of the
model tree and then Edit > Mirror. This doesn't create the issue with
references; all your prior features will be completely editable.

If it's not 100% symmetric, build everything that is, mirror then add
the non-symmetric features after.
