Most likely proe.exe (err parametric.exe) was born when PTC developers couldn't make a dos bat file
do what they were/are doing with a unix csh file.
Startup sequence is like this:
* Unix
1. run <proe_install_dir>/bin/proe
o csh that sets up the environment base on the platform
2. this directly calls $prodir/$mc/obj/pro $*
* Windows
1. run <proe_install_dir>/bin/proe.bat
o a bat file that does not do any setup
2. this calls <proe_install_dir>/bin/proe.exe <proe_install_dir>/bin/proe.psf
o so notice the proe.exe gets passed the proe.psf which contains "environment" variables
o this proe.exe is most likely doing what the proe csh unix script does
3. this calls <proe_install_dir>/<mach_type>/obj/xtop with appropriate enviroment and arguments
So on the Unix side the actual Pro/Engineer process is <proe_install_dir>/<mach_type>/obj/pro and on
the Windows side the actual Pro/Engineer process is PROE_INSTALL_DIR>/<mach_type>/obj/xtop.exe
