Pro/E over VPN...

I'm trying to set up a new machine with Pro/E at home. When I get to
the screen for the license server, it can't seem to find a valid
license. I still have my old machine running, and I can connect to my
work network ok on both machines. I'm just not sure what piece I'm
missing. I remember something a long while back about a 'hosts' file.
I edited that but it didn't help. I can even 'ping' the server by name
(not ip address).

Anyone have any ideas?

Hello Tony,
Two things that may help get a license over your VPN:

1. Set up the license info on your home machine to point to the IP address
of your server not the computer name.

For example, you should see:
ENV=PTC_D_LICENSE_FILE-=7788@192.168.X.X

not:
ENV=PTC_D_LICENSE_FILE-=7788@SERVERNAME

In the *.psf file located in the C:\.....\InstallDirectory\bin directory.

2. Make sure that your VPN allows (does not block) port 7788

Tony,

You may also want to check to see if something else is using port 7788. I've run into issues before where a user installed a free screensaver (a.k.a spyware) and itusedport 7788thereby keepingthem from starting Pro/E. More recently, one of two people at a remote office that connects via a VPN would have intermittent issues with Intralink refusing to connect (no nmsd process). It turned out the port used by the nmsd.exe process (1239) was often getting grabbed by the VPN software itself.In tha case I had to create a batch file that starts the nmsd process and set it to run at login to their local PC. That makes the nmsd.exe grab the port before the VPN software has a chance to.

Anyhow, try running the command netstat -ab from a command prompt window to get a report on ports in use and what is using them. If you see something using 7788, that might be your culprit.

Regards,

Erik
