license borrowing help needed

All,

I need a quick lesson on license borrowing.
How easy is it to do?
How long is it good for, min and max?
What do I need when it comes to data that is in Intralink?
Anything else you can think of.

TIA

Hi John,

I haven't played with license borrowing since 2007, but I don't think much as changed. It's not the most sophisticated implementation (the SolidWorks is much better), so it's medium difficulty to deploy. I'd check out http://www.ptc.com/cs/cs_25/howto/ser10403/ser10403.htm. Some major notes:

1. You CANNOT return a license early, https://www.ptc.com/appserver/cs/view/solution.jsp?n=125363

2. License borrowed can be extend more than 6 days, https://www.ptc.com/appserver/cs/view/solution.jsp?n=/128654.htm

3. Borrow is locked to specific user login, https://www.ptc.com/appserver/cs/view/solution.jsp?n=135500

4. Firewall exceptions. I ran my server on another Windows XP Pro SP2 system (not a server) and needed to make some exceptions for the borrow to work:

port 137 UDP (for name resolution)
port 7788 TCP (License Server)
.\flexlm\i486_nt\obj\PTC_D.exe

I'm not sure about the Intralink data, it's been awhile since I used it, but if there's an offline mode, you're probably okay.

I have a curious question...

I borrowed a license and used pro for a while. I logged out and back in
as "admin" and then wanted to check something in Pro. Instead of
logging out, I just figured I'd open the file from Admin. Pro wouldn't
run. It said it couldn't find the license server (or the borrowed
license for that matter).

Are the borrowed licenses tied to a specific user on a machine? Seems
weird.

Hi Anthony,

It appears that it is locked to specific user see https://www.ptc.com/appserver/cs/view/solution.jsp?n=135500. As stated in another thread, the borrow implementation is horrible. I really hope that PTC will make improvements.
