Hi ,
As a license , there is no difference in Dev and production .
Difference stands only in concept : In dev environment , developer will develop and test the application. But in production , only tested (working) entities/application will be imported. In Dev environment , there can be unwanted entities ,but in production only required entities will be imported for good performance.
ThingWorx installation steps remains same for both dev and production. License will be based on the device Id.
Hello @Sathya
Whatever license you have is always tied to your instance devide ID. And this device ID is unique for every thingworx instance.
so as long as your instance devide ID is different you cannot use same license for different environments.
You can check the device ID in license request file present in Thingworx platform folder and also from the composer via services of licensing subsystem.
Please refer following article to get more info about licensing in Thingworx

Hello @bchaudhary ,
thanks for the reply & suggestion,
I got the point on how license will work based on device ID,
but my question is,
"Imagine we have 5 on prem server out of which 1 is production instance & remaining all are development instances.
assume, i have purchased license from PTC and installed it in one of the dev instance instead of prdn instance, and for prdn instance, using the device id generated one more license key BIN file". please confirm whether it will still holds good or will it act as a development instance & what are all the drawbacks by doing so...
please clarify
thanks,
SB
