Upgrade of ThingWorx from 9.3.2 to 9.6 version

Hi,

We are trying to upgrade our ThingWorx platform from 9.3.2 to 9.6 version

I am having the following doubts:

1) How to handle the Custom widget extensions? - Is any upgrade is required or do we have to import the extension files again after upgrade is completed?

2) How to handle the DataBase (MSSQL) - do we have to take backup? Required or Not

3) TimeZone? If we change Tomcat Timezone is enough or not?

4) License file - This is clear that we don't need license file again while upgrading.

5) All the existing entities will be present or the upgrade will impact?

6) Is Jdk 11 version will support or not? If not which JDK version is applicable

To Note: I have started reading the document from Thingworx Help Centre : https://support.ptc.com/help/thingworx/platform/r9.6/en/?_gl=1*1hrg7ds*_gcl_au*MTY4NDIwNzA2NC4xNzM1NTQ5MTAyLjI2NDUzODIzNi4xNzM1NTQ5MTE5LjE3MzU1NDkxMjU.*_ga*MTMxNDg0MDI3Ny4xNzI1NTIyNjk0*_ga_7NMP2MSYPM*MTczODY1NzY0MS4xNC4xLjE3Mzg2NjAxMDMuMTAuMC4w*_ga_CBN5QVB9VJ*MTczODY1OTk1OC43LjEuMTczODY2MDA5Ny4wLjAu...

Can you help me what are the steps to take care apart from the above mentioned points and how to take care of the above points as well.

Many Thanks!

1. Regarding Custom widget extensions, you have to verify if the custom extensions works fine or not in the target version (9.6) before Thingworx upgrade. If it is working fine without upgrading the extension itself, you don't need take further actions if you are using Installer Upgrade, otherwise, you can upgrade the extension after Thingworx is upgraded.

2. Regarding the database, Yes, you need to take backup before the upgrade. It is recommended. Also please note the software compatibility, it is required MSSQL 2022+ for Thingworx 9.6.

3. Regarding timezone, If you are upgrading from 9.3 to 9.6, typically Timezone data is not migrated. What is the timezone set in your 9.3?

4. Regarding the existing entities, Yes, all the entities will be present in the upgraded system.

5. Regarding JDK, JDK 11.0.22 is supported for Thingworx 9.6.0.

For detailed steps, you can refer to the Help Center as you mentioned.

Thank you for your response Jimwang!

  1. Can you let me know How to check whether the Custom widget extension will support or not? And also we will be using the ThingWorx Installer to upgrade the version as we have used the installer to set up our ThingWorx Platform.
  2. TimeZone we will be setting up acc to our client site TimeZone Like example - Europe/Dublin

Many Thanks!

To verify the custom extension, you can import the custom extension in a test/QA Thingworx 9.6 system and test the functionality of the extension and see if it is working as expectation, if it is working fine, that will be perfect. If not, you have to check and update the extension so that it can work in 9.6.

Regarding the timzone, to make sure data consistence and avoid data lost, I would suggest to open a PTC case for it.
