Add "Upload" to the PTC Windchill toolbar in Solidworks

Many users wish to keep their work into the server, but without check in it. This action is performed periodically during the day and actually the users must switch to the WGM window to perform this action.

Including this action in the PTC Windchill toolbar will allow to the users upload the cad documents directly from Solidworks.

Hi Ramon,

As SolidWorks is a 3^rd party application for PTC, we have some restrictions to support all the features of Windchill in-line with our other products. In order to minimise the differences, we have a WGM preference “save.upload” which provides user an way to get all the work to be uploaded automatically when native “File>Save” is carried out from cad application. This preference can be set at each user level as per requirement of the end user.

Considering this as a vital requirement for the end users, we will review it for implementation in Windchill future release.

End users not always wish to upload his work: sometimes only they save it in the local filesystem and sometimes they upload it. For us it's important to have both functionalities.

On the other hand, after a few weeks working with WGM 10.2 (we come from 10.1), we also think that it will be useful to have the "lock" and "unlock function" on the Windchill toolbar in solidworks. In the version 10.1 a locked file can be overwritten directly from the Solidworks interface, but in the 10.2 version it's not possible because the file is locked at the operating system level.

Yes, I agree with your view on “upload” & importance to have both functionalities. As said earlier,  I will take it forward for review with stakeholders for implementation in Windchill future release.

On Lock/Unlock:

PTC has put a foundation in place with WGM for SolidWorks in PDMLink 10.2 with the introduction of a streamlined interaction between SolidWorks and Windchill by exposing Windchill locations as “virtual” folders on the Windchill file system. This technology called ‘Windchill File System (or WFS)’ allows our CAD integrations to natively interact with Windchill folders from within SolidWorks and can be used to configure SolidWorks to point at Windchill locations similar to any file system locations. This is the root cause for change on how lock/unlock works in comparison with 10.1.

Starting with Windchill 11.0 F000, we have introduced a new enhancement to Lock/Unlock from CAD Session using Right-Mouse-Button (RMB) click. RMB actions will be available for the children (parts, subassemblies as well as children of subassemblies) of the Top parent assembly. RMB actions currently supported are Lock, Unlock, Auto-Checkin, Checkout, Update, View Information.
