Add to Workspace for Projects, from PDMLink

Add to Workspace for Projects, from PDMLink

We were testing Projectlink to determine its viability for expanding the scope of WindChill within the organization. We found that Windchill requires objects to first be shared to projects and then later uploaded back, as projects are considered a separate working area from PDMLink. We were trying to find a way to easily move the items back and forth without adding any extra work for CAD users.

For instance, if a user wants to add a screw from a library to his workspace, for an assembly:

  • He can not simply add it to his workspace.
  • He has to first share it (which has a few extra substeps) and THEN he can add it to his workspace.
  • He can, from within Creo, OPEN it which will automatically share it, add to workspace and open it - which is great! However, the user shouldn't have to OPEN every single component to simply add to the workspace.

We need the ability to add items from a library or product to a Project workspace that will automatically share the item.

We would also like to somehow have an action to automatically place it back in PDMlink and have it automatically do all intermediate Project steps as well.

Thank you!

Surprised no one has answered this.  There is a preference at the org or site level (wherever you set your preferences by default) - Enable Automatic Share to Project  - set it to "Allow automatic sharing"

This allows share on the fly.  There are a couple of things folks need to be aware of though... IF a user opens up something from a product or library into a project workspace, it creates the share and is available to ANYONE in the project.  Users need to be aware of what they are opening into a workspace so they are not exposing proprietary/SBU/ITAR items to people who shouldn't have access.

Also, much to my dismay, if you are using WTParts to build product structure, the automatic share only brings the CAD document if you are adding directly to workspace or opening from creo without extra steps... that means that you have to manually share the wt part later to check in/build product structure if you have wtparts created automatically.

Jim,

It sounds like you have some experience with ProjectLink and CAD Documents. Do you feel it adds a lot to the workflow? What is your typical process?

Not really, but there are users that will complain (they always do).  I am trying to come up with a good solution to create a project template that automatically shares libraries to the project, or an easy workflow so that someone can quickly share all the library items to the project... I'll reply back with what I come up with.

The benefits of using project for early design collaboration is worth the effort

I hear the benefits, but in testing, it isn't that practical. Especially, as you say, with libraries.

BTW, I had Allow automatic sharing already set.

Thank you.
