Only one version of Solidworks can be registered to the WGM at a time. As a consulting firm, we run 3-4 different versions of each CAD package (customer specific).  Switching applications, when done incorrectly, can cause all sorts of cache issues.  Allowing multiple versions of any 3rd part software to remain registered to the WGM would help our switching efficient greatly.

Hi Mike,

We are in the same situation here, where we currently have projects running from SW2015-18. However, there are many problems where I think this is unworkable. It still all comes down to which version of SolidWorks do you want to have open a file at that time. We have times were we have files that we want to open in a newer or older version of SolidWorks, so you can't always go by the attribute indicating the last version of SolidWorks that was used to save the file. It only takes a moment to switch which version of SolidWorks is active, and I can't image any other method that would achieve a different result.

 

You mention that switching applications, when done incorrectly, can cause cache issues. I have to admit that I am not aware of this issue. Would you be able to explain what happens to you?

Hi Micah,

 

When some one doesn't follow the correct order of steps in un-registering/registering a SW app, there's a chance you can get stuck, and the wgm will not allow you to un-register/register.  Essentially, the wgm gets into a state where it won't remove the existing application.  It has happened so many times, that we actually wrote a script to purge the cache of each version of SW we run (2014-2017).  You can delete the caches manually, but it takes some time to do. 

 

We have the registering & switching process well documented on our end, but despite this, mistakes do happen, and users do get stuck in this state in the wgm. We have dozens of customers in different cad versions and packages.  We set up different products to keep them separate, and put the CAD software version in the description field.  Some days you will work across 3-4 different versions of SW.  That's a lot of switching in a day.  Lots of oportunities for mistakes.
